Sunday will be a repeat of the 2021/22 EFL Cup Final where Klopp’s men ran out 11-10 winners in the penalty shootout and went on to lift the trophy.
The Blues are on an impressive run of form since the 4-2 loss to Wolves in the Premier League three weeks ago, unbeaten in their last three games in all competitions including two dominant 3-1 wins over Aston Villa and Crystal Palace as well as a well-deserved 1-1 draw away to the Champions Manchester City.
As for Klopp’s men, they sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League table winning eight of their last ten games in all competitions. They inflicted a crushing 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in their last head to head meeting at the Anfield at the end of last month but this is expected to be a competitive clash considering the injury concerns of the Liverpool squad combined with Chelsea’s good run of form.
Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to clinch his first English trophy after five impressive but trophyless years with Tottenham while the Reds are aiming to win a record 10th EFL Cup title.
Team News:
Fofana, Reece James, Lavia, Ugochukwu, Badiashile & Cucurella are out for Chelsea.
Matip, Jota, Allison, Trent, Thiago, Curtis Jones & Bajcetic are out for Liverpool while Nunez, Salah & Szoboszlai are doubtful.
Chelsea vs Liverpool Tips
Moises Caicedo loves to get stuck in for Chelsea in these big games. He is averaging 1.8 fouls per game so far this season, committing a foul in 14 of his last 16 appearances for the club. He has been booked in three of his last five appearances and committed two fouls in the 4-1 loss to Liverpool last month.
As for Mac Allister, he is averaging the most fouls per game (1.6) for Liverpool this season and has committed a foul in 17 of his 21 league appearances for the club. The last time he came up against this Chelsea side, he committed four fouls and considering the significance of the occasion, just one foul for him should be a banker.
Finally, Liverpool’s high defensive line will help Chelsea create chances on the counter attack which could lead to chances on goal for the Blues. Liverpool’s goalkeeper has registered 2, 5, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4 saves respectively in the last seven games in all competitions and even in the 4-1 hammering of Chelsea at Anfield, this selection was a winner. With Liverpool struggling with injuries and looking vulnerable defensively, I expect this selection to sail in. Combining these three selections gives us a solid bet builder @ 4/5 and we will take that as our main bet with a 1pt stake.
Cole Palmer is proving to be the signing of the season so far for Chelsea as he leads both the goalscoring as well as assists charts for them so far this season having scored 12 goals and registering eight assists in all competitions.. He is Chelsea’s best creative outlet, and is averaging the most key passes per game (1.5) for them this season. With Liverpool’s high defensive line, there is every chance one of his passes puts one of the other Chelsea forwards through on goal.
Moises Caicedo is Chelsea’s second most booked player with eight yellow cards to his name and has seen three cautions in his last five appearances for the club. I expect him to disrupt Liverpool’s free flowing football through aggressive tackles and if he mistimes one, he will go into the book again. At 17/1, this longshot double looks tasty for a small 0.25pt stake that we’ll take as our second bet for this game.
