Newcastle have work to do if they are to qualify for European football next season following their 3-2 loss at Manchester United on Wednesday.
Their current standing of seventh place could be enough for a Europa Conference League berth if Manchester City win next week’s FA Cup final, but Eddie Howe’s team will not want to take the chance so they should be positive in their final game at Brentford.
Their hosts will see a bottom-six finish as a disappointment even though they have not been in dire relegation trouble this season, but Thomas Frank’s side are at least completing their schedule strongly having tasted defeat in just one of their last eight matches.
It should add up to an entertaining final game with both teams looking to end the season positively.
Brentford vs Newcastle Tips
Newcastle have to be positive at the Gtech Community Stadium to give themselves a chance of European qualification and that bodes well for those looking for some final-day entertainment.
Their 3-2 defeat at Manchester United in midweek means they have to rely on other results going their way, but it was another occasion when a Magpies away match generated at least four goals.
That has now happened on seven of the last nine occasions that the St James’ Park outfit have been on their travels with recent results including a 4-1 win at relegated Burnley, a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea and a 4-1 loss at title-chasing Arsenal.
Brentford have drawn four of their last five home matches, but Frank’s team have had their confidence boosted by a decent run in the closing weeks of the campaign and they will also be encouraged to put on a show and end the season on a high.
Newcastle will hope midfielder Anthony Gordon will shake off the knock he suffered in the 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford and he is capable of setting the Magpies on their way by scoring the opening goal against the Bees.
The England international has mustered 80 shots on goal for Howe’s team this season, which is more than any other player and he has chipped in with an impressive 11 league goals.
He stole in at the far post to net his most recent in midweek with a fine finish and while striker Alexander Isak will be fancied by many to get the ball rolling for the visitors, Gordon’s chances of scoring the game’s first goal should not be underestimated and he should be backed to do so at 15/2, having had nine efforts in his last three games.
