Arsenal vs Luton Tips
Luton suffered late heartache at Tottenham on Saturday, beaten 2-1 after taking an early lead, and continue to win plaudits for their performances - though it’s points not praise they need now.
Getting anything from Arsenal, however, will be a huge deal. Mikel Arteta’s red-hot Gunners will have been buoyed by Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Manchester City and will be confident of a swift return to winning ways against one of the Premier League’s leakiest defences.
All the odds and hard, cold logic point to a routine Arsenal win, though they only won narrowly at Kenilworth Road in December and Luton continue to have a go, no matter how illustrious the opponent lined up against them.
Luton’s porous defence almost got away with it at the Tottenham Stadium but they have every right to fear the worst at The Emirates.
The injury-ravaged Hatters were bravely holding out for a draw until Son Heung-min pounced to give Spurs a 2-1 win - and make it 30 goals conceded in Luton’s last 10 matches in all competitions.
Only Sheffield United face more shots than Luton do so no surprise they continue to give way, and it’s hard to imagine the title-hunting Gunners not posting a big number in this game.
Mikel Arteta’s men have scored four goals or more in five different games since the end of January so Rob Edwards should be acutely aware of what they can do.
Indeed, they scored four at Kenilworth Road when the sides met in December, a match the away side won 4-3. That was another heartbreaker for the Premier League new boys though the rematch may have a more conclusive outcome.
The total goal minutes made up at 356 in that match at Kenilworth Road, a particularly freaky scoreline admittedly, but the 13th occasion goal minutes have gone past 200 in an Arsenal league game this season.
The goal threats from Arsenal are from all over the pitch with such a fluid front line and options galore off Arteta’s bench.
Bukayo Saka isn’t guaranteed a start which may mean a tweak but it’s the goals from midfield in particular which really show what an all-round team the Gunners have become.
Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice have shared 12 league goals between them so far with England midfielder Rice far more prominent in an attacking sense than he ever was for West Ham.
And the end product speaks for itself with his ability to find space in and around the edge of the box, while no one has questioned his ability to get a shot away.
This is his best ever goalscoring campaign and he’s worth a dart at 12/1 to strike first on Wednesday.
