The opening 2022 World Cup match of Group H pitted Uruguay against South Korea at the Education City Stadium in a match that ended goalless. Read More
Group H
Thur, 24th Nov - 13:00
Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan
Uruguay have reached the knockout stages of the last three World Cups and will be looking to storm out the blocks in Qatar against South Korea.
They head into the game as the favourites for the win, while South Korea are searching for their first opening-game win since 2010.
For a country with a population of around 3 million people, Uruguay have a stellar World Cup record. They've lifted the famous golden trophy twice - more than England, Spain, Netherlands, and fellow Group H opponents Portugal - they've finished 4th three times and reached the quarter-finals last time out in 2018 where they lost to eventual winners France.
For the first time since 2002 they enter into a World Cup without Óscar Tabárez at the helm, instead they are managed by Diego Alonso who took over in December 2021 and won his first four games to secure his country's passage to the 2022 World Cup; finishing 3rd behind Brazil and Argentina.
Uruguay still have veteran strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in their ranks, plus skipper Diogo Godin, while Darwin Nunez is one of a number of exciting young talents in the squad.
Son Heung-min is unquestionably South Korea's star man. His country have now qualified for 10 straight World Cups, their stand-out showing remains 2002 on home soil when they managed to reach the semi-finals. However, they've since escaped the group stages just once in four appearances.
South Korea have been managed by former Portugal boss Paulo Bento since 2018. He won the EAFF E-1 Football Championship in 2019 and led the Taegeuk Warriors to 2nd behind Iran in qualifying to Qatar.
Uruguay and South Korea have encountered each other a total of eight times. Uruguay have won on six occasions, including at both World Cup 1990 and 2010, while South Korea have just one victory to their name although that did come in the most recent meeting between the countries in 2018.
