Switzerland beat Cameroon 1-0 in the first Group G match at the 2022 World Cup. Read More
Group G
Thurs, 24th Nov - 10:00
Al Janoub Stadium, Al Wakrah
The European side have been priced up as the odds-on favourites to start their tournament with a win, available to be backed at 4/5. The draw is 12/5, with Cameroon around the 23/5 mark.
Switzerland topped UEFA Group C in qualifying for the World Cup. In doing so they beat European champions Italy to top-spot, remaining unbeaten in their eight matches (W5 D3). They have now qualified for the last five consecutive World Cups and have been eliminated at the Round of 16 in each of the last two.
At last summer's European Championships, Switzerland knocked out France on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw in Bucharest, before losing out on spot-kicks to Spain in the quarter-finals. That was a superb tournament under Vladimir Petkovic who stepped down after the tournament.
Murat Yakin is now the man in charge and after enjoying an excellent qualifying campaign, his side are out at 100/1 to lift the World Cup in 2022, but could spring a surprise or two should they reach the knockout stages.
Cameroon also topped their group in the process of qualifying for Qatar, with just one defeat that came at the hands of the Ivory Coast who finished second.
The Indomitable Lions failed to qualify for the tournament in 2018 and some of the older England fans will remember when the sides met in 1990 quarter-final with England knocking Cameroon out after extra time was required. That's the deepest Cameroon have ever been into a World Cup and Roger Milla is still the oldest ever goalscorer after his goal in 1994 at the age of 42.
