Croatia had reached the last-four of the tournament after beating Brazil and Japan on penalties in the quarter-finals and last-16 respectively.
Croatia's opening game of their sixth World Cup was a goalless draw against African side Morocco, which was followed by a 4-1 victory over Canada, then another goalless draw against Belgium which saw them progress through to the knockout stages in second place.
