The second of two Euro 2024 quarter-finals on Friday sees Portugal take on France in a clash between two European heavyweights. The game can be seen live on BBC1 and kicks off at 8pm BST.
The French are the favourites with bookmakers to advance to the last-4 of the competition priced at 4/6 to do so. For those looking to get Portugal onside to make it to the semi-finals, 6/5 is widely available.

Match Preview: Portugal vs France
Portugal finished top of Group F to advance to the knockout stage after managing a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic and a 3-0 victory over Turkey in their first two matches. They then suffered a shock defeat by Georgia in their final group fixture to set up a last-16 tie with Slovenia.
After 120 minutes, the pair could not be split and penalties were required, with Portugal going on to progress. France will represent a much stiffer test for Roberto Martinez’s men and a certain Cristiano Ronaldo may need to improve on his shooting after 18 shots without finding the net so far at this tournament.
France have flattered to deceive for much for the European Championships but they remain one of the favourites to go on and lift the trophy at 9/2. Didier Deschamps’ side only finished second in their group and went on to face their neighbors Belgium in the last-16.
An own-goal by Jan Vertonghen was the only thing that separated the pair after 90 minutes and despite a lack of goals being scored by France this summer, it’s worth noting that they have only conceded one goal across four matches. This sole strike came courtesy of Robert Lewandowski retaken penalty and it would be no surprise to see a team with such a watertight back-line going on to be crowned European Champions this summer.
The Best Betting Markets for Portugal vs France
As mentioned above, France have one of the best defences at the tournament and William Saliba has been a rolls-royce at the back. None of his sides’ four matches so far have featured more than two goals, with three of those featuring just one. I don’t expect Deschamps to change his approach for this clash and expect another defensive masterclass in a low-scoring contest. Backing Under 2.5 goals looks a nice approach.
Fouls could also be on the agenda for this quarter-final and we are recommending two players to give away one or more. The first of those is Bruno Fernandes who is currently on a streak of five internationals in which he has met this line, with foul-totals of 2,1,1,1,1.
Ibrahima Konate is the other man we are targeting in the fouls market. The French defender has given away eight fouls across his last five appearances with figures of 1,1,2,1,3. Combining him and Fernandes to give away at least one foul pays just under even money with Paddy Power.

Pros & Cons of backing France to Win

- Strong record against Portugal
- Fancied by bookmakers to advance to the semi-finals
