The sport of rugby league in the Northern Hemisphere was played in the winter months until the drastic change which took the sport full time professional thanks to the money brought in by a bumper exclusive television rights deal with Sky Sports.
Despite the introduction at Super League's birth of a salary cap, predominantly to stop a repeat of the previous decade in which Wigan strode to title after title over their less wealthy rivals, the Super League era has only seen four teams crowned champions. They are the aforementioned Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Leeds and the now-relegated Bradford.
Super League is often in a state of flux and with a recent deal signed with commercial giants IMG, changes are once again on the horizon. For the 2024 season there will be no relegated side so there is a safety net for the club that finishes bottom, the team finishing top will be crowned league leaders and the overall champion will be determined via a play-off series, which culminates in a Grand Final at Old Trafford in October.
Super League Round 2 Odds
Here we have the match result odds for Round Two of season 2024 of the Super League:
Who is the favourite to win the 2024 Super League?
For the sixth time in the Super League era, Wigan Warriors are the champions. After a hard fought Grand Final win over the Catalans Dragons, the Warriors completed the domestic double of league leaders and Grand Final success. This was the first season for five years that the name St Helens was not etched onto the trophy, but with the talent and experience of winning in the Saints squad they look sure to be the best bet to stop the Warriors going back to back in 2024.
History will be made in Super League 2024 as every game will be broadcast live on main broadcaster Sky Sports or shown on new streaming service Super League +. This is a huge positive for fans of the thirteen man code but has been met with scepticism by some, as it will surely have a negative impact on crowd numbers. One side who are sure to boast a healthy attendance in 2024 is Wigan after their famous win at Old Trafford in 2023, and with some impressive transfer business done ahead of 2024 they are undoubtedly the team to beat. St Helens will begin a season without their GOAT James Roby for the first time in 19 years and Daryl Clark, signed from Warrington, has quite the shoes to fill.
The Saints are second favourites behind the Warriors and Catalans Dragons are next up, although they have undergone quite the reconstruction in the off season after a host of departures. Beyond this trio, Hull KR will fancy their chances of improving again on a fourth placed finish while the Legh Leopards will be strong once more. Perhaps the most interesting side as 2024 rolls around is once again the league's basket case club, the cash rich Warrington Wolves. They have lured league legend Sam Burgess over to become head coach and although his playing career means he will command respect from every member of the squad, he is just 35 and untested as the main man in the coaching sphere. Another gamble as the Wire desperately hunt for the key to making this 'their year'.
London Broncos are back in the big time in 2024 after winning the Championship play-off final, but they look doomed to be wooden spooners (the bottom club in Super League) after confirming some of their squad will stay part time). Salford could be in trouble if the cash strapped club are forced to sell any more stars as their squad is already down to the bare bones, while Leeds, Hull FC and Huddersfield need to bounce back from poor years in 2023. Castleford Tigers wrap up the competition and they may well once again be battling to avoid the bottom spot with newbies London.
Betting on the 2024 Super League
There are plenty of ways to bet on and enjoy the Super League both before the season kicks off or as the action unfolds.
The odds to win the Grand Final, just like those to win the League Leaders Shield or to be relegated, will of course change over time as games progress and teams show they are set for a delightful or disappointing campaign. If punters have a strong opinion on a team doing well or badly from the off, it could be a good idea to back them ante post before things kick off and the hunches are proven correct. Bookmakers also have a range of team specific specials on-site which are worth shopping around for.
