Premier League Tips for Sunday
Man Utd vs West Ham Tip
Manchester United have been living on their wits a bit lately and although they have progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup, they were given a real scare at Wolves on Thursday before they scraped their second win in seven league matches.
They threw away a two-goal lead in the closing stages at Molineux before Mainoo’s late winner, but they may not be so lucky when they entertain the Irons at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Hammers were admittedly underwhelming in their 1-1 home draw with Bournemouth on Thursday, but they have lost just one of their last 11 league games and remain a point ahead of the Red Devils.
While Ten Hag’s side have had their fair share of wobbles on their own patch, West Ham have already won at Tottenham and Arsenal this term, so a visit to Old Trafford should hold no fears and they are worth supporting on the double-chance market, where a draw would also be a winning bet.
It is also worth considering backing Luke Shaw to be booked.
The England left-back has had an injury-hit season, but has got through United’s last two matches, even though he has been cautioned in four of his last five outings.
One of those came in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on December 23rd, when he committed four fouls, so a yellow card for the defender is enticingly priced at 100/30.
Bournemouth vs Nottingham Forest Tip
While Bournemouth are on a three-game winless run in the league, they had picked up an impressive 19 points from their previous seven top-flight games and the two recent defeats came against top-four outfits in Tottenham and Liverpool.
They might have added another impressive road success at West Ham on Thursday night too, as they led early when Dominic Solanke pounced to punish an error by Kalvin Phillips, but the Hammers hit back with a second-half penalty from James Ward-Prowse.
It was a creditable point on the road, though, and Bournemouth will be aiming for three at home when they host struggling Forest.
The Midlanders have lost seven of their 11 away games in the Premier League so far and their back-to-back wins over Newcastle and Manchester United in the final days of 2023 have been followed by five games in which they have not won in 90 minutes, despite three of those contests being against EFL opponents Blackpool and Bristol City in the FA Cup.
Chelsea vs Wolves Tip
Chelsea have had an extra day to recover from their midweek efforts compared to Sunday’s opponents Wolves and have won their last four league matches at Stamford Bridge, but that does not mean the visitors are without hope and they can leave the capital with a positive result.
It is worth keeping those four Chelsea victories in perspective as they have been against Brighton, who have scored just one goal in their four away games since which included a midweek 4-0 thumping at Luton, bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, as well as Crystal Palace and Fulham who have been struggling for form.
Wolves beat Mauricio Pochettino’s side on Christmas Eve and had suffered only one defeat in seven league games prior to that agonising 4-3 defeat to Manchester United on Thursday, showing plenty of spirit to almost claim a point.
Gary O’Neil’s men have also earned a 4-1 win at Brentford and a 2-0 derby success over West Brom in the FA Cup since Christmas.
Wolves have scored in eight of their last 10 away league games and are capable of claiming something from their trip to London.
Arsenal vs Liverpool Tip
Liverpool were successful on their latest visit to the Emirates when an own goal from Jakub Kiwior and a Lucas Diaz strike gave them a 2-0 win in the FA Cup third round.
That game was level until the 80th minute, however, and there may not be much between the teams again in their second league clash of the season on Sunday.
The title contenders faced each other at Anfield two days before Christmas when Salah cancelled out an early Gabriel goal in a 1-1 draw and it would be no surprise if the teams take one point apiece again.
Liverpool have been in stronger recent form, making light of Salah's recent absence due to a combination of the Africa Cup of Nations and a hamstring injury, and they have still not lost in the league since September.
Their packed schedule could play a role in this game, though.
Arsenal have played just twice since the teams' FA Cup encounter, but Liverpool, who had to fit in a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final against Fulham and an FA Cup tie against Norwich, have played five times over the same period.
Even this week the rest advantage goes to the Gunners, who beat Forest on Tuesday, while Liverpool dismantled Chelsea 24 hours later.
Reds boss Klopp has reinforcements arriving and may choose to bring in experienced defenders Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, who both came off the bench in the midweek game.
If the Reds are at all fatigued, that will improve Arsenal's chances of avoiding defeat this time, even though Liverpool have won on four of their last five visits to this stadium.
Liverpool have scored 30 goals in their last 10 games and striker Darwin Nunez should be afforded plenty of opportunities to add to his total of seven league goals this season.
Nunez scored twice in the 4-0 league win at Bournemouth and was also on target again in the 5-2 FA Cup win against Norwich. He looks worth backing to score at any time.
