Manchester United’s hopes of a top-four Premier League spot suffered a blow with Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Fulham and the FA Cup is the only hope they have of capturing silverware this season.
To do that, they need to navigate their way past Nottingham Forest, who claimed a 2-1 win over Erik ten Hag’s side when they met at the City Ground in December.
Team news
Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo will be looking to pick his team up from their 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday, but his hands may be tied in terms of personnel.
Changes could be minimal as the Portuguese manager will not be able to select the injured collection of Nuno Tavares, Chris Wood, Ola Aina, Ibrahim Sangare and Willy Boly.
Ten Hag went with a full-strength team when United beat League Two Newport in the last round so there is little to suggest he will make wholesale changes after the loss to the Cottagers.
Casemiro’s head injury will be assessed, but in-form striker Rasmus Hojlund is set to sit out again while Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Anthony Martial, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will also be absent.
Predicted line-ups
Nottingham Forest (4-2-3-1): Sels; Williams, Felipe, Murillo, Niakhate; Dominguez, Danilo; Elanga, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Awoniyi
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Bayindir; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Lindelof; Mainoo, McTominay; Forson, Fernandes, Garnacho; Rashford
Nottingham Forest vs Man United Tips
Manchester United’s last defeat to Fulham came after a run of five straight victories and they should bounce back and claim their last-eight spot in the FA Cup by winning at the City Ground on Wednesday.
Their hosts Nottingham Forest are still in the thick of the Premier League relegation battle and have kept just two clean sheets in their last 13 matches.
Their 2-1 win over United was one of only two wins in their last ten on the banks of the Trent and confidence in the visitors is boosted by the Tricky Trees keeping just two home clean sheets all season and needing penalties to beat Bristol City in the last round.
Forest have conceded more goals than any top-flight team outside the bottom three, while United have won their last five on the road.
The last four of those, including wins at Wolves, Aston Villa and Luton have seen both teams score and this could follow that pattern.
For a second bet, take a chance on Scott McTominay scoring what would be a ninth goal for United this season.
The Scotland international has had limited opportunities but could get the nod with Casemiro struggling with injury.
Only Bruno Fernandes has had more league shots on target for United than McTominay, who could make the most of his chance.
