Next Swindon Town Manager Odds: Michael Flynn, Mark Cooper, and Paul Tisdale all feature

Including caretakers, Swindon Town have had five different managers in the space of eight months.
There was Richie Wellens who left for Salford City. Noel Hunt oversaw a couple of games before he made way for the surprise appointment of John Sheridan. It didn’t work out and he threw in the towel in April, meaning Tommy Wright took over for the final four games of a disappointing season which ended in relegation down to League Two.
Swindon then made a move for John McGreal in May, as the former Colchester boss signed a two-year deal with the Robins.
Fast-forward a month and McGreal has now left the club without even taking charge of a single game.
"This is a decision we both have made, as we feel we are not able to carry out our duties as manager and assistant manager," revealed McGreal and Rene Gilmartin.
"Our intention from day one was to build a football team to compete in this league, but unfortunately due to the current circumstances the club is facing, we do not feel we are able to do that.
"We have signings ready to be announced. However, the legal proceedings involving the ownership has not allowed us to do so, making our positions at the club untenable."
CEO Steve Anderson has also left the County Ground, whereas Paul Jewell is expected to leave his role as Director of Football.
The next manager will be tasked with overseeing a rebuild at Swindon who released 13 players in the aftermath of their relegation from League One last season.
In truth, identifying who could replace McGreal is a tricky task given that the expected new owner is not yet in place.
However, if the reported takeover by Clem Morfuni’s Axis group goes ahead then he could attempt to lure Michael Flynn from Newport County, reports journalist Alan Nixon.
Flynn, who was recently the favourite for the Wrexham job, has been in charge of Newport since 2017.
Under his watch the Welsh club have reached the League Two play-offs on two occasions, including last season when they lost out to Derek Adams’ Morecambe.
Flynn has been linked with a number of higher-tier EFL jobs over the years, but has always remained faithful to The Exiles.
However, his stance appeared to have changed last month when he said:
“I can't say 100% that I will be back in August. A lot of things have gone on this season that I have not been happy with, I've kept them quiet and we will be sitting down and having a conversation.
“A few things need to get ironed out. I love this club more than anything, that's probably why it gets to me as much as it does. Let's just say there might be two different ways where we think the club is going.”
Swindon could therefore look to take advantage of any uncertainty between Flynn and Newport.
“I think it would be a good steady appointment for Swindon Town,” Rich from Swindon podcast Loathed Strangers told The Sack Race (scroll down for the full video).
“If he did what he did for Scott Twine last year - he really changed his game for the best and he came back a much better player when he spent those six months or so at Newport - if he could do that for Swindon players while in the Swindon job that would go a long way. It’s a logical appointment from Swindon’s side of things but would it be a logical appointment for Michael Flynn?”
Flynn is currently priced at 13/8 (Bet Victor) to make the switch, however it’s a familiar face who leads the betting in former Swindon boss Mark Cooper (11/10).
Cooper took Swindon to the League One play-off final during his 125 game tenure between 2013 and 2015, while he’s since led Forest Green Rovers into League Two and in May he signed a three-year deal to become the new Barrow boss.
“Cooper played a lovely brand of football but his personality, especially when we were up against it, rubbed people up the wrong way,” Rich said to us. “I wouldn’t be too annoyed or against him coming back but I’d prefer to look forward with new names and new people.”
Robbie Fowler is once again being linked to Swindon at 16/1, the same price as Paul Tisdale who is no stranger to the South West having spent 12 years in charge of Exeter City and a much shorter three month stint at Bristol Rovers.
Elsewhere, England coach Chris Powell is a 20/1 shot alongside Neil Harris, while a whole range of names feature out at 33/1 including Michael Carrick, Liam Rosenior, and Sol Campbell.
