Next Premier League Manager To Leave Odds: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cut to 8/1 despite win

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Sack Race odds continue to dwindle
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Sack Race odds continue to dwindle

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been clipped to 8/1 in the next Premier League manager to leave market, despite securing a last-gasp 2-1 win at home to Villarreal in the Champions League.

The Man Utd manager is well accustomed to being under-fire but he headed into the game under renewed scrutiny following a stuttering run of form which included defeats in three different competitions to Young Boys, West Ham, and Aston Villa.

The pressure gauge pointer increased just after half-time when Villarreal took a deserved lead, only for Alex Telles to volley home a stunning equaliser minutes later.

The Spanish side, who beat Solskjaer’s United on penalties in the Europa League final, then had chances to regain the lead, before that man Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up in injury-time to claim the spoils for the hosts and deliver his boss a ‘Get Out Of Jail’ card; much to the jubilation of Sir Alex Ferguson and Usian Bolt in the stands.

The overriding emotion for Solskjaer was undoubtedly relief, whereas opposing boss Unai Emery was left shellshocked on the touchline.

United have now added a valuable three points on the board, which moved them up to 3rd in Group F, and it’s important to note that two of Solskjaer’s 89th minute substitutions - Fred and Jesse Lingard - played a key role in Ronaldo’s 95th minute winner.

However, few would argue that the Red Devils deserved to win the game, and there remain plenty of question marks over Solskjaer’s style of play, his overreliance on individual brilliance, an unbalanced midfield, and whether he is the right man to soar United up to the next level and deliver silverware.

Tough tests lie ahead too as United now face Everton, Leicester, Atalanta twice, Liverpool, Spurs, and Man City in a pivotal and potentially season-defining five-week period.

Champions League Odds

It was only last week that Solskjaer could be backed out at 40/1 to be the first victim of the 2021/22 Premier League Sack Race, odds which were shredded in the aftermath of the weekend’s defeat at home to Aston Villa.

The Norwegian is now hovering around the 14/1 mark with multiple bookmakers, however William Hill clipped his odds to just 8/1 following the conclusion of Wednesday’s match.

Elsewhere, Nuno Santo and Steve Bruce remain the favourites in the market, while Daniel Farke has come under-fire following Norwich’s pointless start.

Meanwhile Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Antonio Conte, and Zinedine Zidane all feature in the next Man Utd manager market, which recently reopened its doors.

However, Solskjaer does have a habit of plucking out results when he really does need them and despite the unconvincing nature of the Villarreal performance, the most important thing is Man Utd found a way to win which they’ll use as fuel ahead of a tricky clash on Saturday against Rafa Benitez’s Everton, who have enjoyed a bright start to the season.
