Football Betting: Which teams have proved most profitable to back this season?
Most teams in Europe's top leagues have around a quarter of their fixtures remaining this season. Here at BettingOdds.com we’ve decided to take a look at which sides in Europe’s Top-Five leagues have been the most profitable to bet on this season.
We’ve based our results on a £10 win stake with bet365 for each team in each of their matches in the 2021/2022 season. We’ve taken a little look into those at the top of the list and picked out which victories have yielded the most profit.
1st - Eintracht Frankfurt - £181.90
After scouring the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1, it’s Eintracht Frankfurt that come out as the most profitable team to bet on this season. The German outfit failed to win in their first six league outings this campaign before travelling to Bayern Munich on Matchday 7.
Priced at 20/1 with bet365 before kick-off, Frankfurt pulled off the unthinkable with a 2-1 away victory at the Allianz Arena, thanks to goals from Martin Hinteregger and Filip Kostic. Both Betfred and BetVictor went 25/1 on the away win back in October and it’s interesting to see that 60% of Frankfurt’s wins have come on the road this season.
Besides their mammoth 20/1 win at Bayern, Frankfurt have also won this season away at; Greuther Furth (1/1), Freiburg (3/1), Monchengladbach (13/5), Stuttgart (19/10) and Hertha Berlin (11/1). These away wins, along with another four on home soil equates to £181.90 profit from a £10 win stake each game.
2nd - Tottenham Hotspur - £130.10
The first team on the list from the Premier League is Spurs, who if you’d placed a tenner on each game this season, you’d be in profit to the tune of £130.10. It’s been a strange year for Spurs, winning their first three games of the campaign before going on a run of five defeats in seven.
This led to the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo and the arrival of Antonio Conte. Four months on and Spurs are three points behind Arsenal in fourth, although the Gunners do have a game in-hand.
It’s the tale of two victories against Manchester City that tell the story behind Spurs being the most profitable team to bet on in the Premier League this season. Nuno’s side beat City 1-0 on the opening weekend of the season when priced 5/1, before travelling to the Etihad in February and completing the double with a 3-2 win priced at 10/1. Remarkably, despite winning 16 league matches this season, Tottenham’s only two wins against ‘Big-Six’ sides this season have both come against Champions Manchester City.
3rd - Wolves - £127.70
Next up we have Wolves who have fared well in the profitability standings in recent years, most notably in 2019/2020 when they did the double over Manchester City. It’s been an impressive first season for the Old Gold under the leadership of Bruno Lage and with eight games remaining they have a good chance of achieving a Europa League finish.
Wolves have taken three points in 14 of their 30 matches and have been strong at the back with only three defences having conceded fewer goals (Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City). Consistency has been key for Wolves in beating the teams below them in the league, particularly in the first half of the season but it’s away victories at Old Trafford (5/1) and Tottenham (9/2) that have contributed the most to their £127.70 profit in 2021/2022.
4th - Crystal Palace - £106.40
Three out of the five most profitable sides this year are from the Premier League and rounding off the English trio is Crystal Palace. Another team like Wolves, who have enjoyed a good season with a new manager at the helm, Palace currently are 12th in the table, 12 points clear of the relegation zone and with a new brand of exciting football under Patrick Viera.
They may have only won seven matches this season but just as they did in 2018 thanks to an Andros Townsend rocket, Palace went and won again at the Etihad this season. Goals from Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher gave them a 2-0 victory in a game where the bookies had priced them 18/1 for the win pre-match. Away victories at Wolves (5/2) and Watford (8/5) have also helped gather the profit for the Palace punters.
5th - Bochum - £103.20
Rounding off the top-five is German side Bochum, who after winning the Bundesliga 2 title last season, will be looking to remain in the top-flight at the first time of asking. With seven matches remaining, Bochum are currently 12th, six points above the drop-zone.
Thomas Reis’ side have won on seven occasions this campaign but there is one result which really stands out. In February, Bochum welcomed Bayern Munich to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion in the hope of beating the Bundesliga juggernaut for the first time since 2004. Priced at 10/1 on home-soil, Bochum defied the odds with a memorable 4-2 victory that will long live in the memory of their fans. Wins on the road at Augsburg (9/4) and Greuther Furth (2/1) have also played their part in a profitable season for punters.
Trends
The first thing that jumps out here is that the top-five most profitable teams only come from England and Germany. Away from those two we have Sassuolo who have topped the table in Italy with £98.30 profit in Serie A. Over in Spain, Real Betis have yielded £71.80, while in France, Nice are the side that come out on top with £88.30 profit.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that a common theme here is that all of the teams in the top-five most profitable have turned over the reigning champions in their domestic division this season. As in previous seasons, those who end up on top of these charts have often beaten the teams at the top and it can really pay to often keep an eye on ‘bogey’ teams for the big clubs. Spotting opportunities when they may not quite be at their best or when the big boys don’t have as much to play for can prove profitable for those willing to take on the short-priced favourites.
