This game had the potential to be one of the biggest games in Liverpool’s history. The chance for Liverpool to win the league at Anfield in Jurgen Klopp’s final ever game. It was the perfect fairy tale.
Unfortunately, unlike most fairy tales, this one does not have a happy ending. An inconsistent end to the season coupled with the relentless winning runs of Manchester City and Arsenal has meant that Liverpool have to settle for third place.
Still, expect a boisterous and emotional atmosphere as the city of Liverpool waves goodbye to their German gaffer.
Despite the match being a dead rubber for Liverpool, Klopp will have been infuriated by their late collapse at Aston Villa. His team were coasting to a 1-3 victory before a late Jhon Duran brace saw Villa snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.
It meant that Liverpool have only won two of their last seven league games, a sad indictment of the end of Klopp’s tenure.
Liverpool aren’t the only side stuttering at the final hurdle. Wolves have won just one of their final 10 games, coming in a nervy 2-1 home win over Luton. Regardless of where the Wanderers finish, the magnitude of the job that Gary O’Neil has done cannot be understated.
Battling with a host of injuries and financial issues, the 40-year-old has led his side to a comfortable mid-place finish, with the threat of relegation purely just pre-season talk. While the pre-match-talk will understandably be centred around Liverpool, Wolves will quietly go about their business as they have done all season.
Liverpool vs Wolves Tips
Hear me out. Gomez has yet to score a goal for Liverpool and has just two shots on target this season. However, he is Liverpool’s longest-serving player and has been there for all of Klopp’s tenure.
Gomez is averaging 0.96 shots per 90, seemingly desperate to grab his first goal for the club. In the draw with Aston Villa, Gomez had a shot saved smartly by Emi Martinez in the 23rd minute, before his customary long-range lash wide late in the second half.
He has been afforded more freedom at left-back, leading to a greater shot output. Despite, as mentioned, he is yet to score for Liverpool and all bar two of his shots have been off target, this is a purely sentimental bet.
If Liverpool get a penalty, you’d like to think they’d let him take it. Mo Salah can’t get the Golden Boot and Liverpool cannot come any higher or lower, so the romantic in me thinks Gomez will take it.
While Liverpool let a two-goal lead slip against Aston Villa, it is usually the Reds who are the ones overcoming deficits.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have won from behind seven times this season, gaining a league-high 28 points from winning positions.
Liverpool have conceded first in 22 games this season, with slow and sloppy starts becoming a staple of their games.
Wolves have nothing to lose and will want to end a stuttering season on a high. Expect them to attack Liverpool early doors. In the reverse fixture, Wolves took the lead in the seventh minute, before The Reds mounted a second-half comeback to win 1-3. O’Neil’s side have also done the double over Chelsea and Tottenham and beaten Manchester City, so it is not out of the question that they cause Liverpool some problems.
Anfield should be bouncing regardless of the score line, so if the Reds do go behind, they should have enough to fight back to win.
