The hosts sit top of the Premier League table with 37 points after 16 games, unbeaten in their last nine league games. They come into this game off the back of a brilliant comeback win via a 91st minute Harvey Elliot strike. The Reds have won every home game so far this season (7/7) scoring a massive 21 goals and conceding just five at Anfield.
As for the visitors, they sit 6th in the league table with 27 points after 16 games, 10 points below their opponents and six below the Champions League spots. Having produced their best performance of the season so far in their 2-1 win over Chelsea,
Eri ten Hag’s men were hammered 3-0 at home by Bournemouth and then crashed out of the Champions League after a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. It has been an inconsistent season for them so far and now the squad is struggling with injury issues which makes this task even tougher. They have not beaten Liverpool in their last eight visits to Anfield and were crushed 7-0 here last season.
The hosts are expected to go into this as heavy favourites based on stats, form as well as the squad news as United hope to cause a major upset. I have included two of my best bets in the preview below:
Team News:
Matip, Bajcetic, Robertson, Thiago, Jota & Alexis Mac Allister are out for Liverpool.
Diallo, Eriksen, Martinez, Casemiro and Malacia are out for Manchester United while Mount, Lindelof, Martial, Rashford, Luke Shaw & Maguire are doubtful.
Liverpool vs Manchester United Tips
- Over 1 goals for Liverpool
- Over 0 cards in the 2nd half for Man United
- Dominik Szoboszlai - Over 0.5 shots
- Alejandro Garnacho - Over 0.5 shots
Liverpool sit top of the league with a dominant home record having won all seven of their home games scoring at least two goals in each one of them. They are also the second top scorers in the league only behind Manchester City having scored 36 goals in their 16 games so far this season. They face a Manchester United side that are struggling defensively having conceded three goals to Bournemouth at home in their last league game. I expect the league leaders to hit the back of the net at least twice here.
As for cards, I expect Liverpool to take the lead early which should present a lot of opportunities for them on the counter attack in the second half. With United’s players already suffering from fatigue after losing in midweek to Bayern, I expect them to tire towards the second half and mistime their tackles towards the end of the game.
Dominik Szoboszlai is averaging 1.9 shots per game for Liverpool and has had at least one shot in every game so far this season (16/16).
Finally, Garnacho has been one of United’s best players so far this season and has had 12 attempts towards goal in just his last two appearances for United. United are not expected to dominate but I do expect Garnacho to put up a fight and register at least a shot against a Liverpool backline that is vulnerable. Combining these four selections gives us a solid bet builder and we will take that as our main bet with a 1pt stake.
Despite Liverpool going into this game as heavy favourites, I just cannot overlook this massive price of 13/2 on Mctominay to hit the back of the net. He is United’s top scorer with five goals with two of them coming last week against Chelsea.
He’s had 14 shots in his last two Premier League games and is a constant threat in the final third for United. He has played a bit further forward this season in the attacking midfield role and will be expected to do the same here in Bruno’s absence. We will take a small punt on him to score anytime at a big price with a small 0.25pt stake as our second bet for this game.
