Liverpool v Tottenham Tips: Reds to rack up the shots as Spurs sit back

Liverpool v Spurs is the highlight of the midweek fixtures with Jurgen Klopp’s side having the chance to go back above Tottenham to the top of the table with three points at Anfield on Wednesday evening. The game can be seen live on Amazon Prime, kicking off at 20:00 and our resident columnist @AnthonyEadson has previewed the game and given us three football tips to accompany.
Liverpool’s injury-riddled season continues with Joel Matip now a doubt for this game after being taken off against Fulham with a back issue. Jordan Henderson could drop into centre back if called upon, however Joe Gomez, Virgil Van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara, James Milner, Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri will all miss out through injury.
Erik Lamela is the only confirmed player to miss the trip to Anfield for Jose Mourinho’s side. The three-time Premier League winning manager could choose to switch formation and include Joe Rodon as part of a back three, however it would be tough for Mourinho to sway from the back four he played against Chelsea that kept a clean sheet at the end of November.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 44 home league matches and have been made the 4/5 favourites to Wednesday’s clash. The three points for Spurs is priced at 7/2, an implied probability of 22%, with the draw being offered at 29/10.
Liverpool 17+ shots - 2pts @ 2/1 Paddy Power
Harry Kane to be the WhoScored Man of the Match - 1pt @ 8/1 Paddy Power
Curtis Jones & Moussa Sissoko to be carded - 0.25pts @ 48/1 Betfair
My first selection on Wednesday evening is Liverpool to have 17 or more shots in the game which is priced at 2/1 with Paddy Power. I’m expecting Spurs to play for the draw here and sit back against Liverpool. This was a tactic Jose Mourinho deployed at Chelsea a couple of weeks ago where the game finished 0-0. In the second half of that match Tottenham had a second half xG figure of 0.0 (nothing), which shows they did not even try to find a winner.
I see a similar story here and it’s also worth noting that Jose Mourinho has never beaten a Jurgen Klopp side at Anfield in five attempts (D2 L3). At home in the league this season Liverpool rank first for shots per game, with 17.3 on average. With Spurs happy to sit back and no other side in the league taking more shots at home this term, I’m happy to get behind Liverpool 17+ shots at 2/1 with the same selection being considerably shorter at the odds-on price of 10/11 with Sky Bet.
I’m dipping my toe into the Man of the Match market for my next selection where I’m fancying Harry Kane to land the spoils at 8/1. This market, that is offered by Betfair and Paddy Power is based on which player is awarded the WhoScored.com Man of the Match award. You can read about how exactly this works with our guide to the Man of the Match market here.
It’s common knowledge that Harry Kane has been absolutely phenomenal for Spurs this campaign with nine goals and ten assists in the league so far. The talismanic Tottenham and England forward is the current favourite to win the PFA Player of the year award at 13/5, and it’s easy to see why when you consider he has been awarded the WhoScored Man of the Match in an incredible seven of the 12 league games he has featured in this season. Effective with his defensive work too, Kane will have to be on top-form if his Spurs side are to get anything on Wednesday, although I’m willing to take a chance on the 8/1 that is available with Paddy Power.
Rounding off the selections for Liverpool v Tottenham is a ‘to be carded’ double that I have picked out with Betfair at 48/1, consisting of both Moussa Sissoko and Curtis Jones to find their way into Anthony Taylor’s notebook. The referee from Wythenshawe gave out more yellow cards than any other official last season with 122 and an average of 3.81 per game, ranking him 3rd for officials with more than 10 games in the 2019/20 campaign.
Followers of my weekend column consisting of three players to be carded will have seen my winner with Moussa Sissoko finding his way into the notebook at 4/1 on Sunday. That was the Frenchman’s second yellow card in four games and with a tough game on the cards at Anfield I fancy him to collect another. Moussa Sissoko was booked in this fixture at Anfield last season and he makes up the first part of this 48/1 double with Betfair.
Curtis Jones is a player who I think Betfair are pricing up wrong at the moment in the ‘to be carded market’. The 19-year-old has been cautioned in the Champions League this term and was also booked in the 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday, which was priced at a rather large looking 10/1. We’re not getting quite that price on Curtis Jones this evening, but with Betfair still going 15/2 in contrast to the 7/2 on show from bet365, this still looks an attractive play.
At the time of writing, the double currently pays best at 48/1 with Betfair. The football schedule is as busy as ever at the moment but please don’t feel the need to bet on every game, and as always, gamble responsibly.
