The two teams met at Super Bowl 2020 and it was the Chiefs that came out on top, winning 31-20 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Andy Reid's team are the defending champions after last year's 38-35 success over the Philadelphia Eagles, but the 49ers will fancy their chances after an incredible campaign under coach Kyle Shanahan.
San Francisco finished the season with a 12-5 record, with three of those defeats coming on the spin ahead of their bye week in Week 8.
The 49ers reeled off six straight wins to secure the No.1 seed in the NFC, but they will have to be at their best to get past the experienced Chiefs.
Super Bowl 2024 Tips
After securing the No.1 seed, the 49ers could watch the Wildcard Round of the playoffs from home, but they have not had it all their own way since then.
They beat the Green Bay Packers 24-21 and the Detroit Lions 34-31, and on another night, they could have fallen short.
However, Shanahan's team have found an answer when it mattered most and that should stand them in good stead ahead of their tie with the Chiefs.
While the Chiefs are the champions and have more experience at this level, it is the 49ers who have the more talented roster.
Reid has worked wonders with his current group and even though he has Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the 49ers should have enough quality to complete their mission.
The 49ers' roster has been built perfectly over recent years and, while they have never beaten a Chiefs team led by Mahomes, they won their 12 regular-season games by an average of 19 points.
If Shanahan's men settle down early, they should be able to rack up enough points to keep the Chiefs at bay.
Remarkably, the Chiefs are heading to their sixth Super Bowl and fourth in the last five seasons.
Reid and Mahomes have already etched their names into the Chiefs' history books and, thankfully for Chiefs Kingdom, the latter plays his best football in the playoffs.
The Chiefs led the league in dropped passes in the regular season, so Mahomes will turn to people he can trust.
Tight End Travis Kelce is that man and he has already come up trumps in the playoffs. While his performances in the regular season were not as good as they have been, he has been excellent in the post-season.
He has caught 16 of his 17 targets for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the playoffs. Expect him to add to that this Sunday.
Shanahan has a plethora of offensive weapons at his disposal and wide receiver Deebo Samuel sits at the top of the wide receiver rankings for yards after the catch.
Samuel is so hard to bring down once he gets into open space and he has been devastatingly effective as a runner this season.
Samuel has collected 892 receiving yards and seven touchdowns this season, while he also rushed for 225 yards and five touchdowns.
He is flexible and durable, the 49ers will lean on him heavily throughout the game.
