Huddersfield vs. Peterborough Predictions: Back Town to carry on their unbeaten march
There are two Championship games being played on Friday night and we have full match previews for both on BettingOdds.com. We've asked our go-to EFL guy Adam Roberts to preview the tie between Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United and he's picked out his three best bets for your attention.
Huddersfield vs. Peterborough Tips
'I can't believe my Yorkshire eyes!'. Huddersfield Town enter this fixture in a supreme run of form - unbeaten in 17 games in all competitions and on Saturday set their best ever unbeaten run in the second tier in their entire history. They are also one game away from the quarter finals of the FA Cup, in which they play divisional rivals Nottingham Forest on Monday night, but first have the little matter of the visit of Peterborough United on Friday night.
To many neutral observers this would seem like a fairly non-descript Championship clash, but these two clubs have history. The towns are separated by 129 miles but have formed an unlikely rivalry due to some high profile games over the years. Their first big meeting was in the 1991/92 season when Boro dumped Town out of the playoff semi finals and eventually got promoted.
The next big meeting was the 2011 League One playoff final, when Town were in the middle of another famous unbeaten run (43 games under Lee Clark) and were heavy favourites to win in front of 30,000 Terriers fans at nearby Old Trafford. Posh again upset the script with a superb 3-0 win, including a Grant McCann goal - this time he returns as new manager of the side for his second spell.
The last big occasion and the one that really gets on Peterborough's fans nerves is the end of the 2013 season, when Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield and Barnsley played out the last ten minutes of a 2-2 draw without either challenging the other, knowing the result would condemn Peterborough to relegation.
All this sets us up nicely for a barnstormer of a match under the lights at The John Smiths Stadium.
My first pick is for Huddersfield Town to win to nil. Not only are Town on a 15 game unbeaten run in the league but they've started to look solid at the back. They've kept four clean sheets in the last six games and have managed to stop the opposition from scoring in 47% of their home games. Posh are bottom of the league for a reason and one of those reasons is their record on the road - winning just one of 17 games all season, conceding 45 and scoring just nine. They have also scored just one goal in their last seven league games.
My second selection is Huddersfield right winger Sorba Thomas to provide an assist. The 23-year-old Welshman was a January signing last season from Boreham Wood and has been a revelation in his time in West Yorkshire. After a quiet introduction last year where he made seven cameo appearances from the bench, Thomas has taken his game onto a new level, playing every game bar one in the Championship and has caused havoc on the right flank, which has resulted in a call up for his national side. Thomas has 10 assists in the league, behind only John Swift of Reading and Harry Wilson of Fulham, and has created 60 chances with his deep running and first time crossing. He also takes the majority of the corners for Huddersfield Town.
After a quiet period for assists, Thomas has exploded back into life, picking up an assist in each of Huddersfield's last two games and I'm expecting him to create plenty of chances here. He's 3/1 to notch his eleventh assist for the season.
My last pick is a long shot double on two players I fancy to be carded, in what is sure to be a heated game. Lewis O'Brien has had a superb season but has also been in trouble with the officials at times - picking up seven yellows and second only behind Duane Holmes for Town. O'Brien also ranks 2nd for fouls with 34 and the single at 13/2 also grabs my attention.
Ollie Norburn has also done a good job at Posh but revealed he wanted to leave the club in the January transfer window - a move that cost him the club captaincy. One reason he was given that captaincy in the first place was 'his nasty streak' according to ex-boss Darren Ferguson. That has been backed up with the stats as like O'Brien, he is 2nd in fouls (37) and Yellows (7).
The two combines pays a whopping 33/1 and I'll be having a small stake on the double.
If you decide to follow either of these selections then good luck, and remember to bet responsibly.
