Hibs vs. Rangers Betting Tips: Expect Gers to turn on the power in the second half
Lee Johnson’s Hibs welcome Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers to Easter Road in Edinburgh at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon in a meeting that has been dominated by the visitors in recent times, with the last five league fixtures seeing Rangers take all three points. We've tasked Tom Winch with previewing this one and providing us with his two best bets.
Hibs vs. Rangers Tips
Hibernian started the season with a 1-0 away win against St Johnstone, they drew against Hearts the following weekend and then left Livingston without collecting any points last Saturday. The last time they beat Rangers at home in this fixture was in 2016 so they know exactly what they’ll be up against.
It’s been the perfect start for the Europa League runners up, they’ve earned maximum points against Livingston, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone with six different scorers already finding the back of the net for the club.
Taking a closer look at the early season stats in the Scottish top flight and Rangers take a while to get into their stride, seven of their eight goals have been scored after the break and this selection will be the first half of my main bet.
Cards have been a frequent occurrence for Hibs, they’ve received 4, 3 and 2 yellows so far and it gives for good reading when backing this selection. For seven consecutive league meetings at Easter Road, Hibernian have received multiple cautions from the referee against Rangers.
The Hibernian defence should have their work cut out for large parts of the 90 on Saturday as they look to pick up a rare result and could lead to tired legs late on during the match where the visitors can capitalise.
This bet has landed in all four of the recent league meetings here and with a price of 5/6 on offer for a repeat, I’m more than happy to have this as my main bet for the Saturday lunchtime clash.
At first glance you may be thinking that's a bit out there, which it is, however despite being just 23 years of age Ryan Porteous has already seen red against Rangers not once but twice in his career.
The youngster was given a red card in December 2019 on the hour mark at Easter Road and most recently last season at Ibrox. Porteous was given a straight red once again on the 30 minute mark in October 2021 so it’s about time he added the third to his tally.
William Collum is the man in the middle for this clash and has already sent a player to the stands this season in a game between Kilmarnock and Dundee United. Collum has dished out 10 red cards in 45 Premiership appearances in the top flight of Scotland averaging 0.22 per game.
Across his 107 appearances as a referee in his career his red card average is slightly bigger at 0.26 per 90 after handing out a hefty 28 in those matches.
With a player who’s not shy from getting stuck in and sometimes a little over the top, and a referee who has a strong average in regards to sending player off the 25/1 does appeal but only with a very small stake.
