Fantasy Football Tips: Bring in Awoniyi for FPL Gameweek 5
The international break has allowed us to take stock of the season so far and look ahead to the upcoming schedule, with some key fixtures to target. Here’s the must-have players for FPL Gameweek 5.
Gameweek 4 Review
The first blanks in the predictions came with Manchester City failing to keep a clean sheet against Fulham, Chelsea struggling at home to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth holding Brentford to a draw.
It was a challenge for my own team too, with new Chelsea transfers in failing to deliver and the departing Marcus Rashford scoring. A monster haul from captain Haaland helped me to a tally of 75 points, with attacking returns also from Mbeumo, Saka, Salah and Maddison.
Defender: Matty Cash vs Crystal Palace (H)
Aston Villa’s Matt Cash has had an impressive start to the season including scoring a brace against Burnley in Gameweek 3. He’s taking up advanced positions on the left wing and has the potential to be one of the most prolific defenders in the game this season, playing in a capable defence who have already kept a clean sheet this season.
He leads the way for shots among defenders with nine, with seven of those in the box and five on target. He’s had three big chances and is competitive against more offensive players for his underlying numbers right now. Opponents Crystal Palace have scored just two goals on the road so far this season, with Villa yet to concede at home.
Midfielder: Heung-Min Son vs Sheffield United (H)
Spurs Heung-Min Son was the surprise package last time out with a hat-trick against Burnley. Having started the first three games of the season on the left wing, a knock for Richarlison saw Son move into a central role where he came alive: producing five shots and two big chances.
Should this central role continue for Son, he could be an electric player in FPL, playing in an Ange Postecoglu side intent on scoring heavily in every game. Remember Son was the Golden Boot winner two seasons ago, scoring 23 goals and ten assists on the way to 258 fantasy points.
Forward: Taiwo Awoniyi vs Burnley (H)
One man deservedly moving up the radar is Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi who is one of just two players to deliver an attacking return in each of the opening four gameweeks, with the other being Mo Salah. He now has three goals and one assist, with only Manchester City strikers Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez scoring more fantasy points in this spell.
The fixtures are finally turning too with Burnley at home this weekend presenting an excellent opportunity to get another win. Awoniyi is ranked fourth for big chances with four and is the talisman of this side. Opponents Burnley are without a clean sheet so far in this campaign, conceding 11 goals in three games.
