It is hard to work out if Eddie Howe is underachieving or overachieving at St James’ Park.
A League Cup final and a top four finish was the standard he set last season but Champions League qualification is looking increasingly unlikely this time around, as is the chance of silverware.
Newcastle are 15 points off the top four and play Manchester City at the Etihad in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
So, in comparison to last season, Howe’s side have probably dropped off.
Add to that their disappointing return to Europe. Granted they were in the group of death but after taking four points from their opening two games, to finish bottom of the table and crash out of both the UCL and Europa League was a disappointment.
Monday’s hosts are unequivocally underachieving. The Blues' budget trumped that of the sides gunning for the title, so considering Mauricio Pochettino’s side languishes in the bottom half of the division, closer to the relegation zone then the top of the division is pretty damning.
Chelsea could also be without 10 players with Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill becoming the latest editions to the treatment room. Conor Gallagher also faces a late fitness test.
Newcastle will be without Kieran Trippier for this clash who joins Joelinton, Nick Pope, Callum Wilson, and Matt Targett on the sidelines.
Chelsea vs Newcastle Tips
Newcastle have only lost three games this calendar year, each of which came against the three sides gunning for the title.
Even if you include those matches, the Toon have only failed to net at least two goals in seven of eight games only failing one short at the Emirates.
As for Chelsea, Brentford netted twice, as did Leeds in the FA Cup. The Blues have not kept a clean sheet since Boxing Day and over that eight game period, they have shipped 16 goals.
At 13/10, I'm backing the visitors to score two or more goals at the Bridge.
Sticking along similar lines, Alexander Isak looks worth a punt to net a brace at 10/1 with Sky Bet.
The Swede has scored 11 goals this season with this exact bet clicking in two of his 16 league starts.
The frontman averages 2.2 shots per game and with xG of 11.71, if anything, he should have scored more goals this term.
