Cambridge vs. Millwall Betting Tips: Back the draw in what could be an even contest at The Abbey stadium

The League Cup gets underway on Tuesday 2 August, with just one of the first round fixtures being played this week, before the rest take place the following week commencing 8 August. Cambridge play host to Millwall on Tuesday and we’ve got @AnthonyEadson on hand to preview the action and provide us with his best bets.
These two sides met in the second round of this competition last season, when Millwall ran out 3-1 winners, with the game having been played at The Den. This time Millwall travel to Cambridge and unsurprisingly, they are the favorites to qualify for the next round, priced at 4/9. Looking back at previous meetings between the pair, you have to go all the way back to 1992 for the last time the U’s beat Millwall, a run of nine games (L7 D2).
Both teams had successful opening day outings in the Football League on Saturday with Cambridge managing a 1-0 win over many punters promotion hopefuls, MK Dons. Mark Bonner’s men face an away trip to Oxford at the weekend and he may look to rest a couple of his more important players such as Joe Ironside, Harvey Knibb and Sam Smith.
Gary Rowett is also more than likely to make several changes to his side that put in an impressive performance to beat Stoke City 2-0 in the Championship last weekend. Charlie Cresswell arrived from Leeds on loan in the summer and he found the net twice in his debut for the club, scoring both goals against Stoke. Millwall’s main priority this season will be to try and build on their ninth place league finish last season and reach the Premier League for the first time, however a nice cup run would be very welcome for the The Lions.
Cambridge United vs Millwall Tips
Since these two sides last met in this competition in 2021, Cambridge went on to achieve their highest league finish since 1993-1994, ending the campaign in 14th in League One. Mark Bonner’s men have history when it comes to knocking out teams from a higher division in cup formats after knocking Newcastle out of the FA Cup last season, as well as Birmingham in the League Cup the year before.
Plenty of changes are expected from both sides here and I think that Millwall look a little short to win this match inside 90 minutes at around 4/5. With both managers potentially prioritising their league fixtures at the weekend, I’m expecting a relatively even contest, and the game to end in a draw looks like a much more attractive prospect at a current best price of 27/10 with Unibet. A penalty shoot-out could well be on the cards here, with the odds on the draw implying a 27% chance of this bet landing.
For those who are looking for something at a bit more of a price, Charlie Cresswell could be worth some consideration in the anytime scorer market, with quotes of 20/1 available from several firms, including Paddy Power at the time of writing.
The 19-year-old who only played 141 minutes of top-flight football for Leeds United last term has arrived on loan from West Yorkshire and got his time at The Den off to a miraculous start by bagging himself a brace on the opening day of the season. Cresswell managed more shots (4) than any other player between Millwall and Stoke in the game on Saturday looking a constant threat from set-pieces. Only Huddersfield (21) managed more goals from set-pieces in the Championship than Millwall (19) in 2021/2022, with a whopping 35.8% of their goals coming via this method last season.
