The Bundesliga powerhouses will be aiming to lift the Champions League trophy for the second time in their history, last winning the competition 27 years ago in 1997 against Juventus, while the Spanish giants are hunting down a record 15th European Cup.
Edin Terzic’s men triumphed against PSG and Atletico Madrid in the semi-final and quarter-final respectively to book their place in the final and despite their underdogs status, they are not a side you can write off. They are competing in the Champions League Final 11 years after losing 2-1 against Bayern Munich at Wembley back in 2013 but will be hoping for a different outcome this time around.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men booked their place in the final after beating Manchester City in the quarter-finals on penalties and pulled off a dramatic comeback in the semi-final against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu in typical Real Madrid style, with Joselu scoring in injury time to send them to Wembley.
With club legend Marco Reus leaving Dortmund at the end of the season and Madrid’s Toni Kroos announcing his retirement, both will be aiming to bow out with glory. These two sides are frequent foes in this competition, having come up against each other 14 times with Real Madrid unsurprisingly leading the head to head record with six wins to Dortmund’s three, but will be taking on each other in a final for the first time. The biggest game of the season awaits us and I have included two of my best bets in the preview below.
Dortmund vs Real Madrid Tips
- Rodrygo - Over 1.5 shots
- Emre Can - Over 0.5 fouls committed
- Gregor Kobel - Over 1.5 saves
- Under 5 goals in the match
Rodrygo is averaging the most shots for Real Madrid in the Champions League (3.2) and has had at least two shots in 12/12 Champions League appearances this season. With Madrid expected to dominate large parts of the game, he should comfortably register at least two shots again in the final.
As for Emre Can, he is averaging the most tackles (2.5) per game for Dortmund and has committed a foul in six of his last seven Champions League appearances, including both legs of the quarter-final as well as the semi-final.
Moving onto Dortmund’s keeper Gregor Kobel, he is averaging 3.5 saves made per game in the Champions League this season with Dortmund conceding 15.6 shots per game in this competition this season. Real Madrid should be able to force Kobel into multiple saves and the line of ‘Over 1.5 saves’ looks pretty solid so we’ll add that into our Bet Builder.
Finally, the last four Champions League finals have only seen one goal scored in each of them and the “Under 5 goals” selection has only lost once in the last nine finals. This is the biggest game of the season and it is understandable to expect both teams to start cautiously which could result in a cagey low-scoring affair.
- Rodrygo - Over 2.5 shots
- Emre Can - Over 1.5 fouls committed
- Gregor Kobel - Over 2.5 saves
- Under 4 goals in the match
For our second pick, I am taking higher lines on all four selections of our main bet builder. Rodrygo has hit three or more shots in five of his last six Champions League appearances, Emre Can has committed two or more fouls in three of his last four UCL games and Kobel has made three or more saves in eight of his last nine Champions League games.
As for the goals, we have already talked about how low scoring these finals have been recently and I expect that trend to continue here so we’ll take the ‘Under 4 goals’ selection to bump up the price of this longshot bet builder to 9/2. However, with bet365’s winning boost included, the price goes up to a huge 11/2 so we will take that with a small 0.25pt stake.
Best of luck if you follow these selections. Please always gamble responsibly.
