Borussia Dortmund are having a hard time shaking off the disappointment of last season.
Die Schwarzgelben fumbled the title on the last day of the campaign, then generational talent Jude Bellingham departed for Real Madrid over the summer, casting a sombre light across Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region.
Whilst their former star man’s goals are clinching El Clasico’s and European nights at the Bernabeu, Dortmund are struggling to come to terms with life without him.
At the weekend, they lost 4-0 in Der Klassiker where Bellingham’s compatriot Harry Kane took home the match ball. It leaves them five points behind Bayern and seven off the pace in the Bundesliga.
In Europe, Edin Terzic’s side are grappling in the group of death. Four points separates Milan (2) at the foot and Paris Saint-Germain (6) at the top.
Tuesday’s hosts have won, drawn, and lost one their opening three matches but will draw great confidence from their victory which came at St James’ Park in the last round.
It was an organised and disciplined display from the German side and a repeat of that performance should stand them in good stead on Tuesday.
Newcastle head to the continent in high spirits having edged out Arsenal on Saturday evening.
Eddie Howe said pre-game it was a test of his side's credentials after they failed to beat Manchester City and Liverpool earlier in the campaign.
Having overcome a stern test against the title-challenging Gunners, the Magpies will fancy their chances here.
Dortmund vs Newcastle Tips
Marius Wolf is an injury doubt for this clash, this bet is not so much about him though but who he will be opposing Anthony Gordon.
The attacker arrived from Everton with a chunky price tag and potential but little else. This campaign, Gordon has added end product to his game and combined with his pace and worth rate, it's made him Nerwcastle’s standout performer.
The Toon’s creative catalyst has scored four goals and assisted two but what interests me here is the fact he’s drawn two fouls per game.
In the Champions League, all three of his opponents have been carded, including Wolf in the last game, and domestically Gordon has drawn cards in five games.
If Wolf doesn't start at right back for Dortmund, Julian Ryerson is likely to come into the side, with the 25-year-old available at 13/4 to be carded. The beauty of it is you can just cash out the bet with whoever is not starting.
Gordon may be good at drawing cards but he is a booking magnet himself as the winger gives as good as he gets.
He tops his sides charts for poor discipline, picking up seven cards in 12 starts against the EPL and UCL.
Combining Gordon with Wolf to both be booked provides interest here at 21/2, a while a Gordon and Ryerson card pays 19/2.
Best of luck if you are backing any of these selections and please remember to gamble responsibly.
