Women's World Cup 2023 Golden Boot Odds: Alex Morgan the favourite
A sea of stars will be looking to make waves in front of goal at the Women's World Cup 2023.
We’ve already analysed the main contenders in the Outright Women's World Cup Winner market, now it’s time to see who is in the mix to win the Golden Boot.
Women’s World Cup Golden Boot Criteria
Before we take a look at the world’s elite sharpshooters, here’s a snippet of information on how the Golden Boot is allocated.
Simply put, the winner of this betting market is the player who receives the FIFA Golden Boot. The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals at the tournament.
If two or more players score the same number of goals, then it's the player with the most assists that wins the award. However, if multiple players are still equal after taking assists into account, it comes down to who has played the fewer minutes - this outcome actually materialised in the most recent edition of the World Cup.
Right, lets look at who is in the mix.
Alex Morgan (USA): 5/1
Alex Morgan was unfortunate to miss out on the Golden Boot at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
The United States striker finished the tournament on six goals, alongside her teammate Megan Rapinoe and England’s Ellen White, however she had to settle for the Silver Boot because Rapinoe - who she had the same number of goals and assists as - played fewer minutes at the tournament, which was the third and final criteria used to decide the Golden Boot winner.
Morgan, 34, now heads into her fourth World Cup as the bookmakers’ favourite to win the Golden Boot for the first time.
Available at 5/1 with both Paddy Power and Betfair, Morgan has scored a whopping 121 goals in 207 games for her country - including nine at World Cups - a figure which puts her 8th in the all-time leading goal-scorers in women's international football.
Expect the American to enhance this tally in the country’s opener against debutants Vietnam.
Sophia Smith (USA): 13/2
Morgan’s USA teammate Sophia Smith is next in the running at 13/2.
The talented 22-year-old has 12 goals in 30 games for her country and ventures into her first World Cup as the top goalscorer in the 2023 National Women's Soccer League season for club side Portland Thorns. Two hat-tricks so far this season showcases her eye for goal, the second in her final club game before jetting off to the World Cup.
Like Morgan, Smith will be eying a fast start against Vietnam, in a tournament where she has real potential to sparkle in the spotlight.
Rachel Daly (England): 10/1
England’s Rachel Daly is third in the betting at 10/1.
The versatile defender/striker played left-back for England at the Euros but has emerged as a contender to Alessia Russo to lead the line for Lionesses in the absence of the injured Beth Mead and the retired Ellen White.
Daly enjoyed a stunning domestic campaign, top scoring in the WSL for Aston Villa with a prolific 22 goals in 22 games. She also scored twice for England in the Arnold Clark Cup success earlier this year.
Considering Daly is not a concrete starter right now, the 10/1 price is a tad short for my liking, although should she get the nod in England’s opener against Haiti she could well run riot.
Other Lionesses to look out for in the Golden Boot betting include the aforementioned Russo at 14/1, Chloe Kelly at 20/1, and Lauren Hemp at 33/1.
Sam Kerr (Australia): 13/1
Home favourite Sam Kerr is sure to attract interest at 13/1 given her pedigree, experience, and love of all things goals; scoring 63 in 120 internationals.
The Aussie, who is widely viewed as one of the best players in the world, scored five goals at the 2019 World Cup and now four years later will be spurred on by a passionate home crowd.
The Matildas skipper heads to the tournament on the back of another successful season at Chelsea. 29 goals in 38 games last term propelled her tally to a whopping 89 goals in 108 games for the Blues across the last three seasons; picking up two Golden Boot awards in that time.
The 29-year-old striker also recently scored in Australia’s recent 2-0 win away to England which condemned the Lionesses to their first defeat in 31 matches under manager Sarina Wiegman.
Selected Others
There are then a host of high-quality players situated around the 12/1 to 16/1 mark, depending on your bookmaker of choice.
Of those, Germany’s captain Alexandra Popp looks a decent price at 16/1 with William Hill. The striker scored six goals for her country at last summer’s European Championship, only to miss the Final through injury, meaning England’s Beth Mead bagged the award because she recorded more assists.
Spain boast a talented cluster of players including their record goalscorer Jennifer Hermoso (13/1), current Ballon d’Or holder Alexia Putellas (14/1), and Real Madrid star Esther Gonzalez (16/1). All three players are well worth a look given that they line-up against Japan, Zambia, and Costa Rica in the group stages.
France’s record goalscorer, Eugenie Le Sommer, has 88 goals on the board including five at the World Cup. She's 20/1 to win the Golden Boot after returning to international football following a two-year absence.
We can't string together a Golden Boot piece without mentioning Marta aka the all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with 17 goals. The Brazilian superstar, 37, is likely to start the tournament on the bench as she looks to return from injury, but it would be unwise to rule out the six-time FIFA World Player of the Year just yet.
If you're after a wildcard then Jamaica's Khadija Shaw is out at 100/1. "Bunny" has a stunning 55 goals in 38 games for her country and has just enjoyed an electric campaign for Man City, in which she scored 31 goals in 30 games.
