Tottenham vs Roma Prediction, Odds and Betting Tips: Back Maddison to score at 10/3
There are several intriguing matches in Europe on Thursday night, including in London where Tottenham clash with Roma at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, live on TNT Sports 1.
Tom Winch has previewed the match and supplied his best bets.
Tottenham vs Roma Predictions
Ange Postecoglou’s men are favourites, and rightly so. The Italian side have had a difficult start to their season. Claudio Ranieri is now in his third spell with the club at the grand age of 73. Roma are 12th in Serie A, just three points off the drop. Their Europa League record stands as (1-2-1) WDL. Claudio has some work to do.
Despite who's in the Tottenham dugout, they’re just ‘Spursy’. Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich snatched all three points just under three weeks ago. Manchester City hosted Ange’s men on Saturday afternoon, Spurs won 4-0. A tremendous result at the Etihad in an eye-opening performance and they’ll be desperate to kick on from that clash. First up is Roma, a fixture where I expect the hosts to claim maximum points.
The Italian side hasn’t impressed this term. Roma have yet to win away from Stadio Olimpico across nine outings. The Yellow and Reds have failed to score in four away days which is uninspiring. Swedish side Elfsborg beat them 1-0 in round two, while Union St. Gilloise held Roma to a 1-1 draw, a game where 1.45xG was created. Roma played Juventus, Inter, Fiorentina and Napoli in Serie A, scoring a single goal.
Tottenham have won seven of their nine matches at this venue. Arsenal defeated them in September. Spurs racked up 15 shots that afternoon.
The other defeat was recently against Ipswich, as mentioned previously. Ange’s men have a flawless record in this competition. Qarabag and Alkmaar have left here empty-handed without scoring. Continuing that streak is likely, although you couldn’t bank on Spurs winning without conceding.
We know how Spurs play. It’s exciting, offensive football. Attack is the best form of defence, more often than not. They’ll control proceedings and dominate the ball while facing a negative Roma side. Claudio Ranieri took charge of his first game over the weekend. They faced a talented Napoli. Roma lost 1-0 and managed a lowly six shots.
Spurs have won the shot count in seven matches here this season. Qarabag managed four more shots than Tottenham. Spurs played with ten men from the 7th minute. City also finished with four shots more when they met here in October. That’s no disgrace. With Spurs’ offensive firepower, I’m confident they can recycle continuous attacks. Backing the home side to have the most shots and win the contest looks a great angle to consider.

After a tremendous display against Manchester City, James Maddison should be raring to get back on the pitch. The Englishman has had some critics in the recent past. I’m confident we’ll see the player at his very best on Thursday night. Seven Tottenham players are priced shorter in the AGS market than the former Leicester man.
Maddison has bettered his goal tally from the previous campaign. He has five Premier League goals to his name. The midfielder is averaging a goal every 156 minutes. James is yet to score in this competition and has managed just two shots across 163 minutes. Both attempts have arrived on target. With a Roma side expected to sit deep and soak up the pressure, perhaps shooting from a distance could be the way to punish the Italian side.
This is the perfect opportunity for Madders to get himself back on track. He’s self-critical and will speak out when things aren’t going how he wants. After the brace against City, he’ll have plenty of confidence. Backing the man to score appeals, especially at the price.
