In the opening few days of the year the astonishing performances of teenage darts sensation, Luke Littler, en-route to the World Darts Championship Final catapulted him to the top of the early odds market for SPOTY 2024 glory.
Littler took a 4-2 lead in the Final, only for Luke Humphries to rally and eventually claim the title. Littler was as short as 3/1 in the SPOTY betting but has since drifted out to 25/1.
Top spot is now occupied by Harry Kane (8/1) ahead of Jude Bellingham (10/1). Both players have enjoyed superb starts to their respective careers at Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, yet it's not only club honours they will be targeting this year but glory on the international stage at Euro 2024, a tournament England are one of the favourites to win.
Should The Three Lions replicate the success of the Lionesses, then it would be incredibly difficult to overlook Kane, Bellingham, or any other stand-out players in Gareth Southgate's squad, with Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden each priced at 25/1.
The 2024 Olympics take place in Paris this summer, meaning a bright light will be shone on the achievements of Team GB. In the 21st century, Andy Murray (2016), Bradley Wiggins (2012), Chris Hoy (2008), Kelly Holmes (2004), and Steve Redgrave (2000) have all won SPOTY after tasting gold in an Olympic year, giving you a real flavour of how people vote in an Olympic year.
Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson (20/1) was perhaps unfortunate to only finish 3rd at the 2023 SPOTY award after she bagged a stunning gold at last summer's World Championships. However, the 30-year-old now has the opportunity to win gold in the 7-event sport this summer.
Similarly, world silver medalist in the 800m, Keely Hodgkinson (also 20/1), will have hopes of gold in France.
Swimmer Adam Peaty, 25/1, has three Olympic golds glistening in his medal cabinet, then there are sprinters Zharnel Hughes and Dina Asher-Smith are both available at 50/1, diving veteran Tom Daley is also priced at 50/1, and the 1500m duo of Jake Wightman and Jake Wightman can be backed at 33/1 and 66/1 respectively, with fellow 1500m runner Laura Muir at 66/1.
You'll also find Sky Brown out at 66/1. Aged just 13 when she won famously won skateboard bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Team GB’s youngest ever Olympic medalist Sky Brown has since gone on to become world champion.
Gymnast Jessica Gadirova, a gold medalist at the World Championships, is out at 80/1.
Tyson Fury (14/1) has previously demanded to be taken off the SPOTY list, but could once again find himself should he beat Oleksandr Usky. Who know we may even finally see him do battle with old rival Anthony Joshua (25/1).
Elsewhere, Mark Cavendish finds himself in the upper echelons of the market at 12/1 as he targets a record breaking 35th stage win in what will be his final Tour de France, while cricketer Ben Stokes is available at 16/1.
Further afield you'll find Rory McIlroy, whose current price of 66/1 will be slashed if he was to go on and win the Masters or any other major for that matter, while 2021 SPOTY victor Emma Raducanu is out at 100/1 to become a multiple winner.
