Both Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth will be hoping not to leave things as late as they did last season to maintain their Championship status and would love to get off to a fast start when they meet in their opening game at Hillsborough on Sunday.
Each team will have cause for optimism as the Owls performed a great turnaround in the closing stages of last season to ensure they didn’t go down, while Plymouth have made the high-profile managerial appointment of Wayne Rooney in an effort to vastly improve on their 2023-24 final standing.
Both of these teams were in a real relegation scrap last season and will see this as a crucial game even though it is the opening contest of the campaign.
However, the manner in which Wednesday finished last term suggests they are the more likely team to take the three points.
They won four and drew two of their final six games to stay up by a three-point margin when it seemed they were doomed before Danny Rohl took the Hillsborough helm, and they face a team who struggled on their travels last term.
Just 16 of Plymouth’s 51 points came on their travels last term and while Wayne Rooney’s appointment as manager is eye-catching, he won just two of his 15 games in charge of Birmingham last season as the Blues crashed down the league to be relegated after being in the top six.
The former England and Manchester United striker also took Derby down from the second tier, and while the Rams were hampered by points deductions, Rooey still has plenty to prove in the dugout.
This looks like a difficult opener against a team looking to build on their encouraging conclusion to the last campaign.
Three of the four defeats Wednesday suffered in their final 16 matches were against Leicester, Ipswich and Leeds, and the Pilgrims cannot be considered in the same class as those outfits, so go for a home win.
Josh Windass signed a new Wednesday contract over the summer, and the forward can ensure he starts the season from where he left off in May.
The 30-year-old missed February and March, but he was back with a bang in the closing weeks, scoring five goals in his final six games, including one in each of the last three, to help ensure the Owls stayed up.
No Wednesday player had a greater tally of shots on target last season than the former Accrington, Rangers and Wigan performer’s 21, and he could ensure they start the new campaign the right way by scoring the first goal in Sunday’s clash.
