Report: It’s….Not Rebekah Vardy - The Most Followed Premier League WAGs on Instagram
Early in 2022, the United Kingdom was engrossed in (Not Quite) the Trial of the Century.
This wasn’t a gruesome murder trial or a climatic corruption case set to bring down key members of the establishment (hopefully that will come later….).
No, this was the War of the WAGs, and it was, with apologies to Peter Andre, brilliant.
WAG: the quite derivative acronym used to refer to wives and girlfriends of high-profile sportsmen, most predominantly footballers - most predominantly Premier League footballers.
Ms Rebekah Vardy, wife of Leicester City striker Jamie, and Ms Coleen Rooney, wife of Manchester United legend and England’s all-time top goalscorer Wayne, finally headed to the High Court of Justice after Rooney accused Vardy of leaking posts from her private Instagram account to The Sun newspaper in 2019, with Vardy countering by suing Rooney for libel.
The trial commenced on 10 May 2022, ending nine days later, and, though Mrs Justice Steyn declared the outcome to be expected "within a few weeks", we’re still waiting for a judgement into July.
So what have we done to pass the time then, with no Premier League football either to keep us entertained? BettingOdds.com has now created a list of the most followed WAGs, from London to Love Island, all Blue Ticked Beauties that perform as the better half to those idols on the pitch. Topping the list is the partner of Manchester United Chelsea superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Georgina Rodríguez, the former Gucci storeworker who now commands a following of an eye-boggling 38.9million: that’s more than the likes of football institutions Arsenal, Manchester City or Chelsea (though still 400million fewer than the big man himself). She’s the reason why Manchester United can command the biggest WAG following of all EPL clubs, with a cumulative total from their squad spouses of 45,625,264, 23.5million more than the closest club Liverpool. Rodríguez is joined in the top five by such famous faces as Little Mix’ Perrie ‘The Voice’ Edwards and Love Island 2018 winner Dani Dyer.
