Premier League Top Scorer Betting: Salah & Aubameyang hit the ground running as Kane struggles against Everton

New season, same names finding the net
So that’s week one of the 2020-21 Premier League season almost wrapped up, and there were plenty of talking points for us to delve into come Sunday evening.
Last season’s champions Liverpool played out a seven-goal thriller with recently-promoted Leeds at a soulless Anfield, edging the encounter 4-3 thanks largely to a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal got their campaign off to a flier with a 3-0 win over Fulham away from home, while Southampton and West Ham both slumped to disappointing defeats against Crystal Palace and Newcastle respectively.
Leicester came out on top in the Midlands battle at the Hawthorns, beating West Brom 3-0 thanks to a brace from last season’s Golden Boot claimee Jamie Vardy, who has seemingly picked up exactly where he left off in July. The 33-year-old’s two goals on Sunday has seen his odds in the Premier League top scorer betting slightly shorten from 14/1 to 10/1 with bookmaker William Hill, making him sixth-favourite in the market heading into gameweek two.
Mo Salah remains favourite to scoop the award this time out, with his price slightly shortening to 4/1 from 5/1 following his three goals against Leeds - two of which came from the penalty spot. The Egyptian certainly looks inspired having missed out on the prize in 2019-20, sporting a fresh new haircut but possessing the same desire in front of goal, early indications suggest that he will enjoy another fruitful campaign this time out.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang again proved why he is one of the most feared attackers in world football with his fantastic finish at Craven Cottage in Saturday’s early kick-off. The Gabonese forward has made a habit out of cutting in from the left and striking home with his favoured right foot, with his effort against Fulham at the weekend mimicking his sublime opener in last month’s FA Community Shield final against Liverpool, rounding off a tremendous team goal from the north Londoners.
The 31-year-old has seen his odds in the market cut from 11/2 to 9/2 after his performance on Saturday, and watching this Gunners side under Arteta and the chances they are starting to create in the final third, he could be a decent bet for your ante-post accumulator.
Harry Kane drifted out to 7/1 yesterday and could be starved of goal chances under Mourinho if the defeat to Everton is anything to go by. The England international didn’t even register one shot on target against Carlo Ancelotti’s invigorated Toffees on Sunday, yet he's still the 5/1 favourite in the Euro 2020 top scorer betting.
All eyes will be on Chelsea’s new recruit Timo Werner this evening, as the German lines up against Brighton hoping to hit the ground running for the Blues after smashing home 28 league goals for RB Leipzig last season. Werner is currently fourth-favourite in the Premier League top scorer betting market, priced at 9/1 with BetVictor, though a goal this evening will surely see those odds cut so it could be worth backing him prior to tonight's clash.
Seagulls front man Neal Maupay will also be keen to get his campaign off to the perfect start with a goal on home soil this evening. The Frenchman enjoyed a positive opening campaign last term, finishing as Brighton’s leading marksman with a 10-goal haul in the Premier League. Maupay could be a worthwhile consideration for an each-way bet this term, with his outright odds in the top scorer market a colossal 150/1.
Wolves Raul Jimenez is also action this evening against Sheffield United. The Mexican is a 33/1 shot in the Premier League top scorer betting market and is another who could be worth a few quid on each-way given his performances last season (17 PL goals).
For me, though, I just can't look past Salah at this point. I know it's only early doors but I think that he will be desperate to return to his perch as the division's leading goalscorer having shared the award in 2018-19 and missed out on it completely last season. Liverpool create so many opportunities in the final third and Salah takes penalties; with a three-goal tally after week one I am feeling optimistic in the 28-year-old's chances this time around.
