Next Burnley Manager Odds: Chris Wilder, Sam Allardyce, Wayne Rooney, Michael Duff linked
Burnley have sacked Sean Dyche after nearly 10 years at the helm.
No manager is unsackable, but we never thought we’d see the day that Burnley pulled the trigger on their long-serving boss, yet with just eight games of the season remaining the club have surprisingly done just that in the hope that a managerial change bolsters their survival hopes.
Dyche, who is the tenth 2021/22 Premier League managerial casualty (a joint-record), twice led the Clarets into the Premier League and enjoyed a memorable European journey following a fantastic 7th place finish in 2017/18.
18th-placed Burnley have, however, notably struggled this season; picking up just four wins from 30 games, which leaves the club four points adrift of safety ahead of an eight-game run-in.
Assistant manager Ian Woan, first-team coach Steve Stone and goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer have also left the club.
So, what on earth happens now?
In a statement on Friday morning, Chairman Alan Pace revealed that Under-23s coach Mike Jackson has been placed in charge for Sunday’s clash against West Ham.
He’ll be assisted by Academy Director Paul Jenkins, U23s goalkeeping coach Connor King and Club Captain Ben Mee.
As for the club's next manager, they said: “The process of replacing Sean has begun and further announcements will be made to supporters in due course”.
Whether Burnley have a manager lined-up or not is anyone’s guess: Could we see a firefighter come in for the remainder of the season?
Speaking of which, Sam Allardyce has emerged as one of the early contenders in the next Burnley manager market, courtesy of BetVictor.
A veteran of the Premier League managerial arena with a stonking eight clubs, Big Sam previously enjoyed a relegation-free top-flight CV, however that record came to an end last season when he failed to keep West Brom up, and he’s not managed since.
Chris Wilder entered into the market at 50/1 before his odds quickly dropped to 2/1. Wilder has invigorated Middlesbrough’s Championship promotion push since he replaced Neil Warnock, and while he’s surely a manager Burnley would consider, they may well struggle to lure him over at this late stage in the season.
Out-of-work managers with Premier League experience include Rafa Benitez, Nuno Santo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Claude Puel, and Daniel Farke.
One interesting name in the betting is Michael Duff, who is hovering at the 8/1 mark at the time of publication. The former Burnley player and U23s coach has done a fantastic job in his first managerial role at Cheltenham, whom he led to the League Two title last season and currently has challenging for a top-half finish. The leap from League One to the Premier League is, however, a colossal one.
Wayne Rooney’s managerial reputation has soared significantly, despite Derby being on the cusp of relegation down to League One. England’s all-time goalscorer has done an immense job in extremely difficult and complex circumstances, so much so that he was even linked with Everton earlier this year: he turned down an interview.
Rooney shunning Everton, only to then crop up at their relegation rivals Burnley a couple of months later would be a pretty remarkable turn of events.
