Newcastle vs Man City Prediction, Odds and Betting Tips: Back City to win in 14/1 treble

Manchester City head to St. James’ Park in Saturday’s early Premier League match as they look to maintain their advantage at the top of the Premier League table.

Scott Thornton has previewed the match and unlocked his two best bets, including a 14/1 fancy which consists of yet another win for Pep Guardiola's side.

Newcastle were beaten 3-1 by Fulham last weekend. They had been enjoying an unbeaten start to that point. Eddie Howe knows his team will have to drastically raise their performance levels if they are to get anything out of this game.  

Pep Guardiola’s side played their part in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Arsenal last weekend. City put the Gunners under huge amounts of pressure after Leandro Trossard was sent off but they were unable to snatch the equaliser until the dying moments of the game. 

Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Miley, and Callum Wilson are all ruled out for the home side. Manchester City will be without Rodri, who looks to be out for the rest of the season after picking up an injury against Arsenal. Kevin De Bruyne, Oscar Bobb, and Nathan Ake are also sidelined.

Newcastle Starting XI:
Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall; Joelinton, Guimaraes, Tonali; Gordon, Murphy, Barnes.

Man City Starting XI:
Ederson; Walker, Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol; Kovacic, Lewis, Gundogan; Silva, Haaland, Grealish.

Manchester City’s ability to dominate a game means that shots can be at a premium. Their matches last season saw an average of 25.97 attempts, below the league average of 27.61. Their matches so far in this campaign have seen an average of 26.6 shots but there were 33 attempts in their most recent away game against West Ham.  

Newcastle matches ranked highly in terms of shots last season. The average of 28.55 in their outings was the sixth most in the Premier League. That average has risen slightly to 29 per game in the early stages of this season.  

There has been plenty of goalmouth action in the recent clashes between these sides which has led to high shot numbers. City won 3-2 in this fixture last season and there were 39 attempts in the match. There were 33 shots when Pep Guardiola’s side visited this ground in the 2022/23 campaign.  

Our next betting angle for this one is over nine corners in the match. An abundance of shots should aid the corner count and that trend was particularly evident the last time these sides went toe-to-toe in Newcastle when there were 16 corners in the match. There have been 10 or more corners in six of the last seven had-to-heads between these sides with an average of 10.71. 

For my longer odds bet, I'm backing shots and corners once again with the addition of Manchester City to win.  

Newcastle matches this season have seen an average of 13.6 corners. That is largely thanks to their home matches, which have seen 19 and 15 corners respectively. There were 14 corners in Manchester City’s last away game in the Premier League.  

City’s only defeat in the last 11 meetings with Newcastle came in the League Cup. They are unbeaten in 10 against the Magpies in the Premier League and have won eight of those matches. Over that period, they are averaging over three goals per game.
