Netherlands Euro 2021 Tips and Betting Odds
Welcome to BettingOdds.com's Euro 2021 profile series, where we'll be counting down to next summer's tournament with an in-depth look at the betting opportunities for each of the countries involved.
After spending several years in the wilderness, failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and the World Cup in 2018, the Netherlands are back in a major tournament on the biggest stage. They reached the final of the UEFA Nations League and the flying Dutchmen would have fancied their chances at the Euros had it gone ahead as planned last summer. However, a change in manager and some inconsistent form has led many to believe that they should be opposed at this summer’s competition.
Author’s Opinion
I’ve massive question marks over the Netherlands under Frank de Boer going into this summer’s tournament. The change of manager last year was far from ideal with Ronald Koeman leaving for Barcelona. De Boer has won just two of his first seven games in charge of the national side.
The flying Dutchmen have been given a generous group which I expect them to qualify from with ease although I’d be opposing them should they meet any of the sides shorter than them in the betting in the knockout phase. Virgil van Dijk’s fitness hangs in the balance and the tournament may come too soon for the Liverpool man who would be missed massively.

Top Three Key Players
Memphis Depay, Lyon
Only two players have more caps than the Lyon forward in this current Netherlands crop of players. Still only 27, Depay is also the joint top scorer in the squad along with Georginio Wijnaldum with the pair having bagged 21 goals in their International careers. This season only Kylian Mbappe has scored more goals in Ligue 1, and Depay’s nine assists is also the joint highest in the division. He can be backed to be the top scorer at the tournament at 16/1 and 40/1 to be the player of the tournament.
Georginio Wijnaldum
Another of the more senior players with 71 caps to his name, ‘Gini’ often finds himself in a more advanced role for his country than he does at Liverpool and has 21 international goals under his belt. He could be a player to look out for in the shots market throughout the tournament considering he has registered at least two shots on target in seven of his last 11 competitive internationals. For the more courageous punter, 66/1 is available on him being top scorer at the Euros, although it’s worth noting that most firms are paying four places each-way
Matthijs de Ligt, Juventus
As we approach the end of the domestic season there is still uncertainty around whether or not defensive colossus Vrgil van Dijk will be fit to play at this summer’s tournament. Liverpool may not want the Dutch to risk bringing their star man back too soon and if he’s still out, it will put even more emphasis on the performances of Matthijs de Ligt. Daley Blind may have to partner de Ligt in central defence and his lack of pace could be an issue. After a shoulder injury kept him out of the start of the season, de Ligt has only played 14 league games this term and he will be key if his side are to go deep into the competition.
Young Gun
Ryan Gravenberch
- One player we are hoping gets some game time at the tournament is Ajax’s 18-year-old Ryan Gravenberch. The midfielder has impressed this term with five assists and three goals to his name in the Eredivisie. He’s also played nine games in Europe for the Dutch giants and scored a peach in the Champions League back in the autumn. Gravenbirch’s time may be limited with De Jong and De Roon in midfield and if you are looking for an alternative in the ‘Young Player of the Tournament’ market, PSV forward Donyell Malen could be worth some consideration at 16/1 after his 21 goals so far this campaign.
Netherlands Outright Odds at Euro 2021
The Dutch have not been to a European Championship final since they lifted the trophy back in 1988 when goals from Ruud Gullit and Macro van Basten gave them a 2-0 win over the Soviet Union.
This summer the Netherlands are priced at 12/1 to win the European Championships, ranking them 8th in the betting.
Netherlands Group Odds at Euro 2021
The Netherlands look to have been handed one of the more generous groups at the competition. In Group C, they will face Austria, North Macedonia and Ukraine.
The Gaffer
In September 2020 Frank de Boer was announced as the new manager of the Netherlands after Ronald Koeman left for Barcelona. De Boer has struggled in his first few months in charge and has only won two of his first seven games. This is rather worrying going into a tournament with the impressive form shown over the last couple of years looking to be a distant memory.
