Could Michael Flynn be on his way to Cardiff after leaving Newport?

Michael Flynn has today left his post at Newport County after four-and-a-half-years in charge.

“It has been some journey. Keeping Newport in the football league in my first few months, then the buzz of FA Cup & League Cup runs, and of course the two Wembley play-off finals,” Flynn said after departing, as he admitted that it was the right time to step down.

With Mick McCarthy feeling the heat at another Welsh club, Cardiff City, the timing of Flynn’s exit has the rumour mill spinning, while it’s worth noting that Flynn wasn’t sacked but left on his own accord.

Could Flynn soon be on his way to the Welsh capital?

McCarthy, Cardiff manager since January, has endured a difficult five weeks during which the Bluebirds have lost six of their last seven games, including the last four in a row.

Next Newport Manager Odds

Earlier this week McCarthy was out at 28/1 in UniBet’s next Championship manager to leave market, which was subsequently taken down after Cardiff’s 4-0 defeat at home to West Brom, a loss which had many fans calling for his head.

McCarthy therefore heads into Saturday’s clash at home to Reading under-pressure, with the man himself revealing that he’d received a vote of confidence this week:

“I spoke to Ken [Choo, chief executive] after the game, and I spoke with [chairman] Mehmet Dalman yesterday. They are all very supportive and want to help make things better." (quotes via Wales Online).

While Flynn to Cardiff has been mooted many times over the years, it is important to remember that McCarthy is still Cardiff manager at this moment in time.  While a fifth consecutive defeat to Reading could potentially change this, who's to say that Flynn hasn’t already decided to take a break from the game following an intense four-and-a-half-years in management.

Flynn is a bright, talented manager who made a real impact in what was his first job in management, yet jumping from League Two to the Championship would be a significant step up.

However, we’re sure it’s a challenge he’d relish.
