With rumours that Ruben Amorim told his faltering Man Utd squad to ‘shape up or ship out’ in a crisis meeting on Monday, Thursday evening represents their first opportunity to show signs of improvement and their last chance to rescue something from their disastrous season. Lyon, meanwhile, are at the opposite end of the momentum scale with seven wins from their last nine games in all competitions, and Paulo Fonseca’s men will be buoyed by their late equaliser in the first leg.
Man United vs Lyon Betting Tips
One of the few bright lights in recent United performances, wing-back Patrick Dorgu has terrorised opposition right-backs ever since arriving at Old Trafford in January. The Dane has drawn 2.86 fouls per 90 across all competitions, being felled at least twice in seven of his nine starts. In the first leg, he was brought down twice, both occasions being by his opposite number in Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The ex-Arsenal youngster will be familiar to Premier League viewers and is not renowned for his foul play; however, in recent weeks, he’s seen an increase in attention from referees. Across his last four appearances, he’s made seven infringements, landing this bet in three of those. Having clearly struggled to handle Dorgu’s dynamism last week, he looks overpriced to do so again.
This tie being finely poised at 2-2 from the first leg means that it becomes a one game shootout and with everything on the line, whichever side takes the lead are highly likely to employ the ‘dark arts’ to ensure they get over the line. In truth, this bet could be played in the reverse way too, with United to win and Onana to be carded; however, at just 11/1, I’d much rather side with Lyon. The French side is in a far better place in terms of form, and the atmosphere at United couldn’t be more contrasting. Lyon last tasted defeat on the road in the Europa League back in 2017, going unbeaten in 12 matches in that period, and so are more than capable of victory.
Goalkeeper cards are always worth a look in knockout cup games with so much at stake and Lyon keeper Lucas Perri has plenty of previous where time wasting is concerned. He’s received seven bookings across his career, one of those coming in the 95th minute of a 1-0 home win over St Etienne back in November of this season and so he’s not afraid to run down the clock. If Lyon get ahead in this game, the Old Trafford faithful will be on his back from every goal kick and free-kick and when referee Sandro Scharer has already booked one goalkeeper for time wasting this season, he won’t be shy when it comes to punishing Perri.
