Lyon vs Man United Preview
While PSG have already stormed to the Ligue 1 title, five points separate Brest in eighth and Marseille in second, with Lyon bang in the middle of this pack in fifth. Paulo Fonseca’s side come into this game in good form, winning six of their last seven games.
OL have never made it past the semi-final of a major European trophy, losing in the final four of the Champions League in 2010 and 2020 and losing in the semis of the Europa League in 2017. Lyon finished sixth in the group stage, before beating FCSB 7-1 on aggregate in the knockouts.
After a turgid start to the season, Erik ten Hag was dismissed as Manchester United manager, with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim hired as his replacement. While the 40-year-old has struggled with a lacklustre squad, there has been some signs of improvement under his stewardship. United finished third in the group stage and then dismantled Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate.
Lyon vs Man United Betting Tips
Despite Manchester United’s disappointing season, one thing that has remained brilliant is the consistency of Bruno Fernandes. The midfield maestro has recorded ten+ goals and ten+ assists for the fifth season in a row and has been the shining light in a poor side.
While his attacking output is outstanding, his defensive work often goes unnoticed. The 30-year-old is averaging 2.26 tackles per 90 this season, making at least two tackles in ten of his last 11 games. Five of the last six centre midfielders against Lyon have made at least two tackles, with 50 centre midfielders in total making at least two tackles against them.
The Red Devils have only won four times away in the league this year, as well as beating Viktoria Plzen and FCSB in the Europa League. Lyon come into this game with five wins from six. They have only lost three times in the last 16 games, coming against Strasbourg away (fourth), PSG at home (first) and Marseille away (second).
Patrick Dorgu was signed in January to add pace to the flanks, and he has delivered. While he still displays youthful naivety, the sign of a top player is there. The 19-year-old is fearless both in attack and defensively, making him a magnet for fouls drawn. In Serie A, he was drawing 2.69 fouls per 90, drawing 3.00 fouls whilst at Manchester United. Dorgu has had two opponents booked since joining the club, including winning six fouls in his last Europa League appearances.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles has not been a clinical fouler this season, averaging 0.61 per 90. However, he has made a foul in five of his last six and will be tasked with dealing with Alejandro Garnacho (2.04 fouls per 90) and Patrick Dorgu (3.00 fouls drawn per 90) – Manchester United’s two most fouled players. Maitland-Niles has also already been booked in two Europa League starts this campaign.
Dorgu is also averaging 1.14 fouls per 90 since coming to England and has been shown two cards. The injury to Ernest Nuamah means Rayan Cherki should play on the right of midfield. The 21-year-old has been fouled 1.69 times per 90, so he should cause a threat to the young Dane.
