Ipswich vs Crystal Palace Predictions
With just one win in their opening 13 Premier League fixtures, Ipswich need to start picking up points quickly if they’re to have any hope of avoiding a return to the Championship with a whimper.
Their shock win at Tottenham and holding Man Utd to a 1-1 draw in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge had hinted at better things to come but they were held comfortably at arm’s length by Nottingham Forest on Saturday. They welcome Crystal Palace to Portman Road, one of three sides level on points with the Tractor Boys.
Oliver Glasner’s men have also only beaten Tottenham this season, and with that result coming back in October, they, too, are in desperate need of some points before they get sucked into the relegation dogfight.
In what should be a tightly contested affair with low margins, it makes sense to focus on the tackle and foul markets. Palace games are renowned for tackles and with Ipswich committing the third most fouls of any side, we’ll be focussing our attention on duels for the home side.
Leif Davis has made a good start to Premier League life, so much so that there have been calls for him to be introduced to the England senior set-up. He’s one of Ipswich’s most prolific players when it comes to fouls, averaging 1.08 per game and has committed at least one foul in nine of his 13 league appearances. Most recently, he’s made two fouls in each of his last three games, showing that perhaps Ipswich’s lowly league position is starting to frustrate him.
Davis will be opposing a combination of Daniel Munoz and Ismaila Sarr who have drawn 2.26 fouls per 90 this season. Sarr in particular has always been a tricky customer as his career average of 2.2 fouls drawn per game for club and country will attest to. Of the 13 opposition left backs to face Crystal Palace this season, they’ve combined for 10 fouls, with six of those making at least one foul.

Omari Giraud-Hutchinson has been one of Ipswich’s most consistent attacking threats this season, however, he’s also done his fair share of defensive work. The attacking midfielder has averaged 1.2 tackles per 90 in the Premier League and has made at least one in eight of his 12 appearances. Like Leif Davis, he’s also seen a recent uptick in his data, making nine in his last four matches, with two in each of his last three.
Giraud-Hutchinson will be involved in a midfield battleground that includes Jefferson Lerma and Will Hughes, two of the most combative players around. The Eagles duo have been dispossessed a combined 2.15 times per 90 this season and with Eberechi Eze also occupying central areas, Omari is going to be kept very busy. 15 of the last 17 central midfielders to face Palace have made at least one tackle, with six of those making at least two.
