Ipswich vs Aston Villa Prediction, Odds and Betting Tips: Huge 60/1 tip at Portman Road
This week, Matthew O’Regan has his two best bets from the Premier League’s opening Sunday game between Ipswich and Aston Villa, with cards and goals expected.
Ipswich vs Aston Villa Predictions
After defying the odds by coming fourth in the Premier League last year, Aston Villa are playing Champions League football this season, beating Young Boys 0-3, and they have a mammoth clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Unai Emery’s side currently sit third in the Premier League, behind reigning champions Manchester City and Arne Slot’s Liverpool. Villa have won four of their five games, with their sole loss coming against Arsenal.
In last week’s 3-1 victory over Wolves, Ollie Watkins scored his first goal of the season, with Jhon Duran scoring yet again off the bench.
Villa have an extensive injury list, with Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos, Jaden Philogene-Bidace, John McGinn, Lucas Digne, Matty Cash, and Tyrone Mings all expected to miss out.
Ipswich have had a battling start to the season but are yet to pick up a win. However, Kieran McKenna will be pleased with the determination his side has shown as they sit outside the relegation zone. Losses to Liverpool and Manchester City started the season before 1-1 draws with Southampton and Fulham and a 0-0 draw at European-chasing Brighton.
It was a heavy summer of spending for Ipswich, with a net spend of over £100m. McKenna has a nearly full-fit squad to call upon, with Harry Clark the only confirmed absentee. Kalvin Phillips and Nathan Broadhead are touch-and-go with slight knocks.
Aston Villa have had a strong start to the season, winning four of their five games. Their only loss came against Arsenal – a match they would have scored in had it not been for the heroics from David Raya.
This was their second game of the season and followed a 1-2 win at West Ham. Since the defeat, they have beaten Leicester 1-2, Everton 3-2 and Wolves 3-1; going 0-2 down against Everton and 0-1 down after 25 minutes against Wolves.
Emery will be annoyed at his side’s defensive fragilities. They conceded 61 goals last season, 20 more than Liverpool, who finished above them in the league.
Ipswich opened up the season with a 0-2 loss to Liverpool – a game the Tractor Boys were in until the hour mark. They then took the lead after seven minutes away at reigning four times champions Manchester City but were 3-1 down after 16 minutes – eventually losing 4-1.
Their first point came in an exciting 1-1 draw with Fulham before somehow keeping a clean sheet at Brighton in a 0-0 draw. It was late heroics again at Southampton, with Sam Morsy’s late equaliser salvaging a point. It was a game in which the hosts should’ve won, squandering several golden chances with a 2.49 XG.
It’s a game that the Portman Road faithful will be up for, and it would not be a surprise to see the hosts on the scoresheet. However, Villa look too potent in attack this season, so they should edge a high-scoring, entertaining affair.

Amadou Onana has been a revelation in midfield since signing from Everton in the summer. The Belgian international scored the opener in the wins at West Ham and Leicester and the final goal in the 0-3 win at Young Boys. The 23-year-old is a threat from set pieces, as well as possessing a fierce long shot.
He also adds steel into the midfield, averaging 7.79 duels won per 90 and committing 2.42 fouls per 90. This has seen him pick up two yellow cards in 335 Premier League minutes.
Sam Morsy scored his first goal of the calendar year against Southampton. The Egyptian is more known for his tenacious style of play, picking up 14 yellows in 42 league starts last year. The season before, he had 12 yellows in 44 starts.
This season has started similarly, with Morsy being shown three yellows in five starts, committing 1.67 fouls per 90.
The midfield trio of Amadou Onana (1.88 fouls won p90), Youri Tielemans (1.80 fouls won p90), and Morgan Rogers (1 fouls won p90) mean midfielders against Aston Villa get booked more often than not, with 11 centre midfielders (one every game) booked in just seven games.
