A team last season that played some great football in spells but lacked that threat from their central striker was Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. This has forced Arsenal to strengthen in said area in the form of Brazilian Gabriel Jesus, who Mikel Arteta worked with in his time at Manchester City.
Finishing fifth in the Premier League will feel like a huge disappointment for both fans and players as they sat four points ahead of Tottenham in fourth place with only three matches to play. They went on to lose 3-0 to Tottenham and 2-0 to Newcastle before beating Everton on the final day 5-1, finishing in fifth position and losing out on Champions League football yet again. They now haven’t managed Champions League football since the 2016-17 season under Arsene Wenger.
Saka led the scoring for the Gunners last season netting eleven times in the Premier League, with Smith-Rowe scoring an impressive ten goals in over 1000 minutes less than his International team mate. Their only players to play as a striker, Lacazette, Nketiah and Aubameyang, managed just thirteen goals between them; a poor output for a team chasing Champions League football. The introduction of £45M man Gabriel Jesus will increase their firepower in the attacking third where Arteta will be hoping for a solid return in the form of goals.
His previous seasons in the light blue of Manchester City were rather lacklustre, although he showed glimpses of his quality throughout. Playing predominantly on the wide right in recent terms, Jesus has had less goal scoring opportunities than he would playing through the middle like he could here in North London. In his last three seasons under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City he managed eight, nine and fourteen goals in the Premier League, which wouldn’t be enough for an each-way return here, but in a central role with less rotation he could have a great chance of getting some place money.
His pre-season so far has started incredibly well for the Gunners, netting three times already in only two forty-five minute stints. He looks sharp and motivated to prove he can get amongst the goals, with this move the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents with more game time than when at City. Arsenal received eight penalties last season, with no set penalty-taker in the side, there is also a good chance Jesus could be handed this role which would also see an increase in his potential goals this season. With bookies offering 20/1, 4 places each way at 1/4 the odds, 5/1 looks generous for Jesus to get amongst the top four scorers this season for a potential nice return.
