Middlesbrough to beat Swansea
Only three sides are priced shorter than Middlesbrough in the Championship Winner market for the 2024/25 season and they are the first team in our Acca on Saturday. Boro closed out last season by losing just one of their last 12 league matches and I expect them to carry that form into this new campaign.
In Emmanuel Latte Lath they have one of the biggest goal threats in the division and his side came out on top both home and away against the Swans last season. Improvement was seen under Luke Williams’ after his arrival in South Wales and I think if we were to see this game played in three weeks time I think Boro would be much shorter than the 10/11 that is currently on show.
Rotherham to beat Exeter
This will be the first meeting between Rotherham since 2013 when both sides were in the fourth tier of the English football pyramid. Steve Evans poached Exeter’s Zak Jules this summer with the Grecians making the long trip up to South Yorkshire for a 5:30 kick-off on Saturday.
The Millers have also signed Jonson Clarke-Harris in the transfer window and after 78 goals in 166 Championship and League One appearances for Peterborough he is a proven goalscorer for this level. I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him in the top scorer market and I’m also backing his side to get off to a fast start here.
Birmingham to beat Reading
The fact that Birmingham are priced at just 15/8 to be crowned League One winners says a lot about just how well they are expected to go this season. Blues have broken the transfer record in the third tier numerous times this summer with their new striker Alfie May ready to lead the charge back to the Championship at the first attempt.
Reading on the other hand are going through a turbulent period with the process of the club changing ownership. There has been a worrying lack of transfer activity and I make Birmingham my banker on the opening weekend of the campaign.
Stockport to beat Cambridge
Another side who I fancy to go well this season is Stockport County who are back in League One after being crowned League Two Champions last term. In Dave Challinor they have a great manager who seems to go from strength to strength with the club. They also have an owner with deep pockets and I think they can be an outside poke for a play-off place despite only being recently reacquainted with the third tier.
County lost on the last day of the previous campaign to Wrexham, but prior to that they had won eight on the bounce and were already crowned Champions before the final day. Cambridge only won two of their last 11 under Garry Monk last season and I fancy Stockport to carry their momentum into their curtain raiser.
