Thursday Acca Tips
LASK vs Liverpool - Darwin Nunez to Score
Although he has not quite hit the heights of the man many were comparing him to when joining Liverpool last summer Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez is still undoubtedly one of the biggest handfuls in world football today. A physical specimen of a number nine whose chaotic nature seems to bamboozle his teammates as often as it does his opposition, there have been signs this season Nunez is finding his feet in red.
LASK will not have faced a striker like the Uruguayan and with Cody Gakpo preferred on the weekend at Molineux we can assume Nunez is chomping at the bit to start in Liverpool's Europa League opener.
Sheriff vs Roma - Romelu Lukaku to Score
After a nightmare summer that started with a return to Chelsea upon the expiry of his loan at Inter, involved a failed proposed move to Juventus which caused outrage among Inter fans and players alike, Romelu Lukaku finally found a new home with old boss Jose Mourinho at Roma. Despite the Belgian's reputation as a bit of a lummox with most football fans, his numbers are unquestionable and on his first start for his new club against Empoli on the weekend, he found the back of the net in a 7-0 mauling.
Mourinho of course loves to go strong in European competitions (as he showed in winning 2022's Conference League and making the 2023 Europa League final) and with Lukaku still itching for minutes now he is back fit, I expect him to start at Sheriff.
The Moldovans are no mugs as they proved by winning at the Bernabeu a few years ago but their visitors should prove too strong and the price of Lukaku to score anytime is too tempting to ignore.
Brighton vs AEK Athens - Evan Ferguson to Score
Attempting to second guess a Roberto De Zerbi starting line up is getting as tricky as playing Pep roulette at this stage, but with the Italian's Brighton side flying in the league the Seagulls will surely go strong in their first foray into the Europa League.
AEK Athens are the visitors and I'd expect Brighton, who have made mincemeat of Man United and Newcastle in recent weeks, to prove far too strong and put a big score on the Greeks.
After being a substitute on the weekend Evan Ferguson looks a fairly sure bet (De Zerbi pending) to start up top and the Irish talisman is everything anyone could want in a centre forward.
Good on both feet, a presence in the air and full of intelligent movement he has all the tools in his arsenal to trouble AEK and if in from the off I expect him to add to his four goals so far this campaign.
West Ham vs Backa - Jarrod Bowen to Score
Europa Conference League winners begin another European adventure in the Europa League against minnows Backa at the London Stadium to round off our bet The Serbian side don't look up to the standard of a Premier League opponent and so David Moyes may ring the changes, but I'd be surprised if Jarrod Bowen doesn't keep his place in the eleven and he looks a cracking bet at 6/5 to bag a goal.
Bowen has started this season as he ended the last, in goalscoring form. He of course bagged the late winner that famous night against Fiorentina in last season's Conference League final and has proven an even finer marksman in Europe than domestically.
Nine goals in 21 appearances in Europe is a decent return and I think against an opposition that shipped seven to Braga in the Champions League qualifiers, Bowen can feast once more.
