Who are the favourites?
Hosts India are the current favourites with the bookmakers to lift the trophy for the first time since 2011. If they do succeed, it will be the third time that they have been Cricket World Cup winners after their first triumph came in 1983.
India Odds
Before the action got underway on Thursday 5th October, India were available to be backed at 2/1 in the outright winner market. Virat Kohli’s side then brushed away Australia in their opening fixture and have now been clipped into 6/4. Those latest odds imply a 40% chance that India will lift the trophy on November 17th.
England Odds
Reigning World Champions England are the current joint second favourites with odds of 5/1 available with most trusted betting sites. It was a disappointing start to the tournament for England with a defeat to New Zealand by nine wickets, but they bounced back in convincing fashion in the second match, beating Bangladesh by 137 runs.
Australia Odds
Australia can also be found at 5/1 in the market, despite their opening game defeat to India. They have won the tournament more than any other (5) side since the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975, with their most recent win coming in 2015.
New Zealand Odds
Punters could have got themselves 10/1 pre-tournament for New Zealand to go the distance and lift the trophy. The Blackcaps put in a tremendous performance in their opening game against England and made light work of The Netherlands with a 97 run victory. Off the back of those two wins, they have seen their odds slashed into just 6/1.
South Africa Odds
South Africa were scintillating with the bat in their opening game against Sri Lanka, posting a record score for a World Cup ODI match of 428/5. Three different players scored a century in that match, with bookmakers slashing their odds from 8/1 into 6/1 to win the tournament.

Format
The 2023 Cricket World Cup is showcasing 10 teams participating in a round-robin stage, which will be followed by the knockout rounds. During the round-robin stage, each of the 10 teams will compete against one another, with a victory earning them two points, and a tied or abandoned match resulting in one point each. Following this initial phase, the top four teams will secure a spot in the semi-finals, where the winners of these matches will ultimately contend in the grand final.
