Chelsea v Liverpool tips: Goals on the menu in Super Sunday clash

Chelsea welcome Premier League champions Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Sunday in what looks the pick of the games this weekend. After spending north of £200m this summer, Frank Lampard’s side will be expected to challenge for the title this season and this game gives them a chance to lay down a real marker.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the only injury concern for Jurgen Klopp. It’s a completely different story for Chelsea on the injury front. Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Billy Gilmour will all definitely miss the game. César Azpilacueta, Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic are all a doubt and will be assessed on Saturday.
Having a look at the match prices and the bookmakers have made Liverpool the 6/5 favourites for the win - an implied probability of 45.5%. The draw can be backed at 11/4, with a win for Chelsea currently top priced at 9/4 with Boylesports.
The game can be seen live on Sky Sports, kicking off at 16:30. I’ve picked out three football tips for the game which I think should go close on Sunday.
Mason Mount 1+ Shot on target - 1.5pts @ 13/10 Paddy Power / Betfair
2-2 Correct score - 0.5pts @ 12/1 bet365
Mane & Werner 1+ shot on target, Alexander-Arnold & Kovacic to be carded - 0.5pts @ 40/1 Paddy Power
Mason Mount played every home league fixture for Chelsea last season and for my first selection I’m backing him to have one or more shots on target, priced at 13/10 with Paddy Power and Betfair. The 21-year-old enjoyed a good season with the Blues in 2019/20 and I’m expecting him to push on again this term.
At Stamford Bridge last season, Mount registered 16 shots on target in the 18 games he featured in. With that in mind I think the 13/10 is a good price here for him to just have one on target against Liverpool. He was also promoted to free-kick duty in the second half of the campaign and I think this could be a lively encounter based on the meeting between these two at Anfield in July which finished 5-3 to Klopp’s side. SkyBet have this same selection priced at 4/7 which gives plenty of the appeal to the 13/10 on show from Paddy’s and Betfair.
Next up I’ve opted for the correct scoreline of 2-2 priced at 12/1 with bet365. As I mentioned above, the last time these two sides met it ended in a 5-3 victory for Liverpool and I think everything points to goals being on the agenda again on Sunday.
Chelsea have scored at least two goals in 11 of their last 13 Premier League games and over 2.5 goals has also landed in 11 of those 13 games. Again, looking back to last season and Liverpool have seen their last four league games include over 2.5 goals. I’m expecting a wide open game and with such a plethora of attacking talent on display I think it will be an enjoyable watch. Both sides will want to win this game but I think both Frank Lampard and Jurgen Klopp would be quietly happy with a point. 12/1 with bet365 is the current top price available for the 2-2 correct score with most other firms going 10/1.
My third and final bet for Chelsea v Liverpool comes in the form of both Timo Werner and Sadio Mane to have one or more shots on target with both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mateo Kovacic to be carded at 40/1 with Paddy Power.
Timo Werner is the first name in this Same Game Multi. On his debut against Brighton the German took five shots on goal. He looked sharp and made some clever runs in behind the defence. The 24-year-old averaged 1.9 shots on target per game in the Bundesliga in 19/20 and I’m backing him to have one on Sunday.
For Liverpool, I’m including Sadio Mane to have one or more shots on target. The Senegalese forward was another player who took five shots on goal in the opening weekend of fixtures. None of those shots hit the target but I think he will put that right against Chelsea. Mane registered a total of 36 shots on target in 35 games last season and at 1/2 he’s a fair price to have one against Chelsea.
Moving onto the cards and the first of two bookings I’ve included in this 40/1 shot is for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Only Fabinho and Joe Gomez picked up more yellow cards for Liverpool last season with Trent picking up five in the league. The freshly crowned Young Player of the Year will most likely be up against Kai Havertz and I think it should be an interesting battle to watch.
For Chelsea I’m backing Mateo Kovacic to find his way into referee Paul Tierney’s notebook. The Croatian missed the trip to Brighton on Monday due to suspension and he should slot back into the side here at the expense of Jorginho. In the 19/20 season Kovacic was booked no less than eight times in just 23 starts in the league and he looks good value to pick up his first of the season to bring home this longshot. Best of luck to those following the selections and as always, please remember to gamble responsibly.
