Brighton vs Newcastle Preview
Brighton’s six game winless streak was ended in dramatic fashion with an 89th minute Kaoru Mitoma header and 92nd minute Carlos Baleba howitzer seeing them emerge 3-2 victors over West Ham. It was a result that could prove decisive in the hunt for a UEFA Conference League spot.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side have been very inconsistent this season - failing to beat Southampton, Leicester, Wolves and Ipswich at home - so the German will be delighted his side were able to limp over the line.
Only in the 3-0 win over Chelsea have Brighton one by more than one goal in a home game in the league, so Hurzeler still has work to do in convincing the Brighton faithful he is the right man for the job.
While the Seagulls have only lost three times at home this campaign (against Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham), they have won just seven from 17, with the majority of these coming against ‘the big six.’ In fact, the only non-‘big six’ sides Brighton have beaten at home have been West Ham and European chasing duo Fulham and Bournemouth - a good sign ahead of the visit of 3rd place Newcastle.
Nottingham Forest’s midweek slip-up would have delighted Newcastle fans, with the Reds staying in sixth, failing to leapfrog Eddie Howe’s side. The Magpies now sit two points clear in the Champions League places but face a tricky end to the season.
Newcastle boast the fourth best away record in the league, taking 27 points – one fewer than their hosts have taken at home. However, a 4-1 loss at Aston Villa in the last away game is a cause for concern.
Howe’s side have already faced Brighton twice this season, losing 0-1 in the league and 1-2 after Extra Time in the cup, so they will be keen to inflict revenge on the Seagulls.
Brighton vs Newcastle Betting Tips
Fabian Hurzeler’s debut season in England has been a mixed bag, with many fans criticising his sides poor defensive record. Only Wolves, Totttenham, West Ham and the bottom three have conceded more goals than Brighton, while only Tottenham, Brentford and the current top five have scored more goals.
Albion are eight league games without a clean sheet, with the last one coming in the routine 0-4 win at Southampton in February. In fact, The Seagulls have kept just seven clean sheets this season, with Bart Verbruggen coming under fire for his poor run of form. Of Brighton’s 34 games, 25 have seen at least three goals – the highest total in the league. Their last 11 games have seen over 2.5 goals, with the 0-1 home defeat against Everton in January the last time this has not landed.
Newcastle games are average 3.20 goals, with 23/34 of their games seeing at least three goals, including the last six. Only Manchester City and Liverpool have scored more goals than Eddie Howe’s side who boast extraordinary fire power upfront. The injury to Joelinton significantly weakens their midfield, with the addition of Joe Willock more attacking, leaving their midfield a bit more exposed than usual – something that could lead to more goals.
Joao Pedro’s sending off at Brentford and Georginio Rutter’s injury means that Matt O’Riley should be afforded another chance in the ‘ten’ role on Sunday. The 24-year-old has found game time hard to come by, starting just nine times since his summer move from Celtic.
O’Riley has been unlucky with injuries but is starting to make an impact in the side. The Dane was unlucky not to score against Leicester, recording three shots and one on target in seventy minutes. He then played 65 minutes against Brentford, going close with an early free kick and having a shot blocked, before his replacement Kaoru Mitoma halved the deficit. Against West Ham, O’Riley impressed in 82 minutes, registering a shot on target.
He has now started the last four games and should be afforded more attacking freedom again, making his shot on target price tempting at 6/5 with bet365.
Brighton vs Newcastle Team News
Brighton have been decimated with injuries this season but will be boosted by the imminent return to action for Joel Veltman, Igor Julio, Jan Paul Van Hecke and Tariq Lamptey. Now, only Joao Pedro (suspended), Adam Webster, Ferdi Kadioglu, Georginio Rutter and James Milner are absent for Sunday’s game.
Newcastle will be without Jamaal Lascelles Joelinton and Lewis Hall.
