Author's Opinion
Austria have not been to a World Cup since 1996 and only reached their first European Championships back in 2008 and this squad will be looking to progress beyond the group stage of a major tournament for the first time since 1982.
With star names such David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic, there’s every reason to believe that this side can qualify from a group that includes the Netherlands, North Macedonia and Ukraine. The bookies seem to think so too with Betfair going just 3/10 that they qualify from the group, and it’s worth remembering that four of the six third-placed sides will also advance to the round of 16.

Top Three Key Players
Marko Arnautovic, Shanghai Port
Marko Arnautovic has been linked with a move back to West Ham in the latter stages of this season with reports suggesting he is unhappy in China with Shanghai Port. Only four players have picked up more caps in the history of the Austrian national side than Marko Arnautovic and he will be relishing the chance to get back on the big stage this summer. The 32-year-old started out as a winger but has proved himself over the years as a versatile player who uses his physicality to his strengths. ‘Arnie’ picked up nine yellow cards and a red in his final season with Stoke and he’s one to watch out for in the ‘to be carded’ markets.
David Alaba, Bayern Munich
The stand out name in the Austrian side to many will be Bayern Munich’s David Alaba. The 28-year-old has just claimed a remarkable 10th Bundesliga title and in 2020 he was also named Austrian footballer of the year, for the seventh time. A player with an extensive trophy cabinet which includes two Champions League winners medals, Alaba will be vital to his country this summer if they are to get out of their group. For his country Alaba often takes up a more advanced role to that of his club and he can often be found in the centre of midfield or on the wide left. For these reasons it may be worth keeping an eye on his price in the shots markets with bookmakers potentially pricing him up as a defender.
Marcel Sabitzer, RB Leipzig
Another player who frequently takes up a more advanced position for his country is Red Bull Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer who has nine goals to his name for club and country this season. Sabitzer can either play in the hole behind the striker who can play up alongside Arnautovic if called upon. A player with a big engine and a big price tag of currently around £35m which could well rise if he has a good tournament.
Young Gun
Christoph Baumgartner, Hoffenheim
At 21 years of age, Christoph Baumgartner looks to be one of the brightest young talents in this current crop of Austrian players. The youngster is an attacking midfielder who can play on either the left or right side. In his most recent outing for Hoffenheim Baumgartner he let off eight attempts on goal with four of them hitting the target. This shows quite how much he loves to shoot and again for those reasons we’ll be keeping an eye on his price in the shots markets from bookmakers such as Betfair and Paddy Power.
Austria’s Outright Odds at Euro 2021
Euro 2021 will be the third European Championships that Austria have reached after going to their first back in 2008. This summer they are currently best priced at 125/1 each-way to win the tournament, with 1/2 odds available each-way on teams getting to the final.
Austria’s Group Odds at Euro 2021
Austria have been drawn in Group C, which pits them against the Netherlands, Ukraine and North Macedonia. Austria are priced at 5/1 to finish top of the group and can be backed at 2/5 to qualify for the round of 16
The Gaffer
Franco Foda is the head coach of the Austrian National team. Foda, who spent most of his career as a player in the Bundesliga in the eighties and nineties, took the reins at the start of 2018. Since then he guided Austria to a promotion in the Nations League and has ensured they have qualified for this Summer’s delayed Euros. Foda won the Austrian Cup and Austrian Bundesliga with Sturm Graz in 2010 and 2011.
