Aston Villa vs PSG Preview
Despite going into a shock 0-1 lead after 35 minutes in the first leg, Unai Emery’s side were 2-1 down after 49 minutes, eventually losing 3-1 thanks to a last-minute Nuno Mendes goal. The Villains have a mountain to climb in the second leg against a PSG side yet to lose in the league.
A game away at already-relegated Southampton presented Emery with the perfect chance to rotate his squad. He made four changes in a comfortable 0-3 win. A strong January window saw Donyell Malen, Marcus Rashford, and Marco Asensio arrive, with the trio adding much-needed attacking impetus.
While overturning a two-goal deficit against PSG looks an arduous task, Villa can take solace in the fact that PSG have been eliminated from a Champions League knockout tie in three of the seven occasions where they have won the first leg by two+ goals – the joint record in the competition history. Unai Emery has also won four Europa League titles, so he has plenty of European pedigree.
PSG had no game on the weekend, so they are well-rested heading into this game. The Parisians dominated soon-to-be Premier League champions Liverpool over two legs but needed penalties to progress as they chase their first-ever Champions League trophy.
Luis Enrique’s side is unbeaten in the league, winning 23 games and drawing five in Ligue 1, including winning their last ten on the bounce. The Spaniard has cultivated a strong squad possessing pace on the counter – something that prevents serious danger to a Villa side chasing the game from the start.
Aston Villa vs PSG Betting Tips
PSG’S exciting front three caused many issues for Villa last Wednesday, with Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskheila scoring and Ousmane Dembele recording an assist. With Doue and Kvartskheila rotating during the game, the Villa fullbacks struggled the most, with Matty Cash subbed at half time after four fouls, three tackles and a yellow card.
Lucas Digne survived, making three tackles and one foul. The Frenchman has now made at least two tackles in nine of the last ten games (with super sub), only failing when he made just one tackle against Preston.
Youri Tielemans has become a mainstay in the side and is likely to partner Boubacar Kamara again. The Belgian has made a foul in 19 of his last 23 starts, including the first leg.
Backed by a boisterous home crowd, Villa should be attacking from minute one. Since arriving on loan from Manchester United in January, Marcus Rashford has started eight times for his new side, recording a shot on target in seven. While the only blank was against PSG, it was a game in which Villa were second best throughout. The 27-year-old should start up front again, giving him many opportunities to fire at goal in a game where Villa are chasing from the start.
