Arsenal vs PSG Preview
Arsenal’s priority focus now remains on the Champions League after Liverpool were officially crowned Premier League champions after beating Tottenham 5-1 at a buoyant Anfield. The Gunners were always playing catch up in the league, so Mikael Arteta may be relieved he can finally shift all of his attention to winning Arsenal’s first ever European trophy.
Arsenal took 19 points from a possible 24 in the group stages, before dismantling Eredivisie side 9-3 in the last 16. Real Madrid were next in the quarter finals, with two fantastic Declan Rice free kicks and a smart Mikel Merino finish enough for a 3-0 win at the Emirates. To the surprise of many, Arteta was brave at the Bernabeu and went toe-to-toe with the Galaticos, emerging comfortable 1-2 winners against the reigning champions.
English clubs are becoming a bit of a theme for PSG in this years competition. They lost to Arsenal and beat Manchester City en route to a 15th place finish in the group phase. Fellow Ligue 1 side Brest were swept aside 10-0 on aggregate in the knockouts, before needing penalties to defeat Premier League champions Liverpool – despite being by far the better side over the two legs.
Aston Villa were next on the agenda. Luis Enrique’s side edged past them 5-4 on aggregate to set up a mouthwatering semi-final clash with Arsenal. The English side are priced as slight favourites to progress. However, PSG have been strong in the league this year, with their first defeat coming only this weekend against Nice.
Arsenal vs PSG Betting Tips
Jurien Timber suffered a cruciate ligament tear early into his Arsenal career, keeping him out for most of his debut season. The Dutchmen’s versatility has made him a key component of Mikael Arteta’s side and he has a big task on his hands on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old is averaging 1.20 fouls per 90 in all completions, rising to 1.86 in the Champions League. Against Real Madrid in the second leg, he made five fouls as he looked to contain the dangerous Vinicius Junior.
He will likely face up at right back again to deal with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who is drawing 1.92 fouls per 90 this season. In the first leg against Aston Villa, the Georgian tormented Matty Cash who made four fouls and was booked before being hooked at half time. Enrique sets up with a fluid front three who should all rotate, so it would not be a surprise to see Timber booked – he is averaging 0.23 yellows per 90 this season.
While Nuno Mendes is averaging 0.20 yellows and just 0.92 fouls per 90, he will be tasked with marking Bukayo Saka. Arsenal’s talisman is winning 2.04 fouls per 90 this year. The 23-year-old has drawn a yellow card from two of his three opponents since returning from injury, while Mendes foul count increases in the Champions League – a competition he has been booked three times in already.
Arsenal vs PSG Lineups
Jorginho (rib), Riccardo Calafiori (knee), Gabriel (hamstring), Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Jesus (cruciate ligament), and Kai Havertz (hamstring) are set to miss out, while the suspended Thomas Partey is a big miss in the middle of the Park for Arsenal.
PSG manager Luis Enrique has no major injuries to contend with so he may have a benching headache on his hands.
