At this stage of the season, many sides have their feet up and are heading to the beach, but this game involves two sides who are anything but.
Arsenal and Newcastle sit 2nd and 3rd in the Premier League table with just two points separating them. Despite five spots for Champions League qualification this season, neither side is yet assured of securing a place at the top table of European football.
What happens on Sunday afternoon will play a big part in deciding the fate of both teams in what looks like a cracking clash.
Arsenal vs Newcastle Betting Tips
With 20 goal involvements this season, Jacob Murphy is known more for his attacking exploits than his defensive acumen and as such has only committed 0.44 fouls per 90 this season.
He generally avoids getting stuck in, however, last weekend he was deployed in a more defensive wing back role and with this game a crucial one for the Magpies top five ambitions, Eddie Howe may opt for this approach again.
In the last meeting between these sides at the Emirates, Murphy played on the wing but still managed a foul and so he’s got previous in this fixture.
The real value in this selection is in Murphy’s match-up with Gunners left back Myles Lewis-Skelly.
The England international is one of the most fouled players in the Premier League, drawing 3.07 fouls per 90 and quite simply draws fouls for fun.
This bet has landed for each of the last 10 opposition right sided forwards with those players combining for a massive 18 offences and so despite Murphy’s modest data, he’ll do well to avoid at least one foul.
In tight games with lots at stake, set pieces are often the difference, and when a Newcastle side that has scored the fifth most set-play goals in the division faces an Arsenal team that has conceded the joint third most, Magpies centre-backs feel a good place to look for shots.
Dan Burn has had a quiet season in front of goal by his standards, averaging just 0.63 shots per 90, however, his Carabao Cup Final goal seems to have awoken his goalscoring passion as he’s had eight shots and netted once in his eight league starts since that triumph at Wembley.
The Gunners have been uncharacteristically vulnerable defending set pieces this season with only Southampton and Wolves conceding more goals from them.
That weakness won’t have been helped by Gabriel’s injury and having conceded five shots to opposition centre backs in their last five games, Newcastle should be targeting this area.
Bournemouth got some joy from long throws in Arsenal’s last game at the Emirates and with Burn in good shooting form, he can take advantage too.
Arsenal vs Newcastle Team News
Arsenal have Kai Havertz back in training, fuelling rumours that he could feature this weekend. The Gunners will hope that Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard overcome minor injuries, but Mikel Merino is suspended.
Newcastle are expected to be without Kieran Trippier and Joelinton.
The lineups for Arsenal vs Newcastle will be displayed below approximately one hour before kick-off.
