Arsenal vs Ipswich Prediction
If you’d told Arsenal fans in August that they’d be six points clear of Man City at Christmas and then simultaneously mentioned being six points off top having played a game more than the leaders, you’d have likely received some very puzzled looks. That’s the reality for Mikel Arteta’s perennial chasers though as they’ve failed to capitalise on City’s downfall. A hamstring injury to star player Bukayo Saka will have only further dampened expectations, however, games against Ipswich and Brentford over Christmas represent a chance to close the gap.
The Tractor Boys will be more optimistic about their chances of meeting their target of survival and would likely have taken being within two points of safety at this stage of the season. In contrast to Arsenal, their 4-0 humbling by Newcastle last time out was the first of three difficult festive fixtures as they entertain Chelsea after facing the Gunners and then have games against Brighton, Man City and Liverpool in the New Year.
Arsenal have adopted a slightly more pragmatic approach this season which has resulted in them doing a lot more defensive work. Their comfort in allowing the opposition more of the ball has led to more fouls when trying to win it back and they’re making 11.7 fouls per game. They’ve also been caught offside twice per game, meaning their opponents have averaged 13.7 free kicks per game. The Gunners opponents have had at least ten free kicks in all but one of their Premier League fixtures and Ipswich have won at least ten in 12 of their 17.
On the goal kicks front, Arsenal have averaged 5.18 per game this season and have taken at least four in 12 of their 17 league matches. Both Wolves and Nottingham Forest forced six goal kicks on trips to the Emirates and with Ipswich’s opponents having taken 5.65 per game this season, it feels a safe bet for Arsenal to have at least four.

William Saliba’s tackle numbers have seen a sharp increase this season with the Frenchman averaging 2.35 per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He’s made at least one tackle in 14 of his 16 starts. At home, he’s only failed to make a tackle against Southampton and will be tasked with containing Liam Delap and Omari Giraud-Hutchinson who are Ipswich’s most dispossessed players drawing 4.76 tackles between them per 90 this season.
At the other end of the pitch, Dara O’Shea has also been kept very busy. The centre back has averaged 1.46 tackles per 90 and has made at least one tackle in ten of 14 starts. His numbers against the big sides have also been consistent with two tackles against Brighton, Newcastle and Spurs, three against Aston Villa and four against Man Utd. The Irishman will be opposing a combination of Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus with that pair being dispossessed 4.56 times per 90 between them this season. The last nine right-sided centre backs against Arsenal have combined for 14 tackles between them across all competitions, emphasising how well occupied O’Shea will be.
