Ashes 2023 Squads
England won’t name a full squad for the Ashes and will do it on a game-by-game basis. They have named one for the one-match series against Ireland the week before the Ashes starts, and these will be the players that England will be picking from for the first few games of the Ashes series:
Ben Stokes (captain), Ollie Pope (vice-captain), Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Dan Lawrence, Jonny Bairstow (wkt), Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Mark Wood, Matt Potts, Jack Leach.
England are experiencing some injury issues to their bowling stocks, with Jofra Archer already ruled out of the full series. Mark Wood’s long-standing injury issues means he is unlikely to play back-to-back games, while James Anderson and Stuart Broad are unlikely to play all five due their ages. If Olly Stone can get back to full fitness he could be given a go, while Brydon Carse and Saqib Mahmood will also be waiting in the wings.
In terms of batting, many England fans were sad to see Ben Foakes left out of the side after a solid year as England’s wicket-keeper, particularly when Zak Crawley’s record in Test Cricket is modest to say the least.
Australia play the World Test Championship final against India at the Oval the week before the Ashes starts, and they have named a squad for that game and the opening two Ashes tests:
Pat Cummins (captain), Steve Smith (vice-captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wkt), Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, David Warner.
